James Boyes Brownsmith Chaplin was born on 16 August 1823 at Saussey, Manche, France.1 He was the son of Thomas Manley Chaplin and Evarilda Margaret Bradley.
The following information comes from Angelo Figurelli's forthcoming book:
James' birth was recorded both in France and in England, and so he acquired two nationalities. "Boyes" was a tribute to his baptism witness Thomas Boyes; "Brownsmith" a tribute to his uncle Richard Brownsmith.
Based on documents, I can say that James Chaplin was in the Merchant Navy. He joined at 16 years of age in 1839 and in 1848 was promoted to second in command a merchant ship.
James was about 5ft 11in tall, brown hair, hazel eyes and fair skin. He had an anchor tattoo on his left arm and could read and write. He learned the trade with his uncles, some captains of the Merchant Navy, other officers of the Royal Navy. His brothers, Richard and Thomas, were also men of the sea.
When he was not at sea, James lived in St Helier, Jersey with his uncles.
Around 1849, he traveled to Brazil, his destination being the city of Rio Grande, RS, and then to the colony of Cambria, which had been created to cultivate cotton, with the production being sent to Lancashire, England.
James probably made a number of trips and it is likely that he was one of the crew of the vessel "Irene" that sailed in 1850/51 with Jane Burt (his future wife) on board.

James's name was translated as Santiago in Brazil.
James Boyes Brownsmith Chaplin married Jane Burt, daughter of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown, on 21 June 1851 at English Consulate, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Entry sighted (Vol 1, Page 89) by A. Figurelli. Jane was age 24 years. A witness was Thomas Benbow Philips who later founded a colony in Patagonia.
At the time of their marriage in 1851 James and Jane were living in the colony of Cambria, about 80 kms from the port city of Rio Grande (where all immigrants first arrived). In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there were three British colonies: Cambria, Dom Pedro II and Monte Bonito.
From 1858 they lived in Rio Grande.
