Elizabeth Burgess

The parents of Elizabeth Burgess are unknown. An Elizabeth Burgess was baptised 29.8.1762 at Hellingly, daughter of John and Charity Burgess, but a burial of an infant Elizabeth Burgess is recorded there on 17.11.1762. Also, an Elizabeth Burges was baptised 27.3.1737 at Hellingly, daughter of Nic. and Mary Burges. However, an Elizabeth Burgiss was buried on 31.12.1752 at Hellingly.
The 13 June 1778 Poor Law records for Hellingly contain an entry which may identify the father of Maria Burgess as J Prodyer/Prodger:
A journey to Lewis [Lewes] with Eliz. Burgess 2s/6
A man & horse to carry her 5s/-
Paid for Warrants 2s/-
Expences in searching for J Prodyer/Prodger 12s/1d.1

In September 1778, in the Poor Law records for Hellingly, it is recorded "Dame Bradford for Eliz Burgess lying in & keeping one month £2"
(stopped search April 1781, Film # 004427619; image 384.)1
November 1778: Two days journey to search for J Prodyer[sic] 5s/1d
Expenses for Mr Gower & myself 18s/-.2

A possible marriage is: 12 Aug 1783 at Westham the marriage of James Prodger and Elizabeth Burgess. James is of Arlington and Elizabeth of this parish (Westham).3
Poor Law records for Hellingly on 5 May 1790: Paid Eliz Burgess when she lay in at Arlington £2. Soon thereafter Elizabeth starts receiving a regular monthly payment from the parish. According to the Sussex baptism index Elizabeth Goldsmith Burgess was baptised at Arlington on 16 May 1790 daughter of Elizabeth Burgess, illegitimate.4,5
Poor Law record: 1790: Paid Master Clark for keep of Elizabeth Prodger and mending of shoes £1 0s 6d. An Elizabeth Proger[sic], infant, was buried 22 Feb 1793 at Hellingly.6,7
The above records are confusing: was she known as both Elizabeth Burgess and Elizabeth Prodger (e.g. Burgess alias Prodger), or are these two separate people?

Jane Burgess

b. 1 October 1797, d. 29 September 1858
FatherJohn Akehurst b. 19 Dec 1751, d. 1829
MotherMaria Burgess b. 1 Nov 1778, d. 17 Jan 1862
Jane Burgess was baptized on 1 October 1797 at St Peter & St Paul, Hellingly, Sussex, England, "illegitimate."1,2 She was the daughter of John Akehurst and Maria Burgess.
Marriage banns for Jane Burgess and Richard Funnell were published on 21 April 1816 at Hellingly, Sussex, England; The banns for their marriage were read April 21,28 and May 5, 1816 at Hellingly and read:
"Richard Funnell of parish of St John Under The Castle in Lewes, bachelor and Jane Akehurst Burgess of this parish, spinster."
The banns for Jane's marriage refer to her as Jane Akehurst Burgess. Although she was born illegitimate as a Burgess, she was known as Akehurst. Birth certificates for her children have her maiden name as Akehurst.
Jane Burgess married Richard Funnell, son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth Inkpen, on 9 May 1816 at St John sub Castro, Lewes, Sussex, England, Richard is of this parish; Jane is of Hellingly.3
Richard and Jane's first child was baptised at Hellingly (Jane's place of birth) and subsequently at Chiddingly. However, they do not appear in the 28 May 1821 census for Chiddingly. The baptisms of their children Jane (1822) and John (1824) at East Hoathly suggest they may have been living there at the time. From 1826 the baptisms resume at Chiddingly though.4
The 1839 tithe map survey identifies the location of Richard and Jane's cottage and garden at Holmes Hill as plot 810 near the intersection of the Lewes Road (now the B2124) and the road running between Whitesmith and Golden Cross (now the A22). The owner of the property was the parish, indicating that this was probably subsidised by the parish and part of their overall poor relief programme. The tithe map shows that the Bat & Ball pub is located at that intersection (on Lewes Rd) but the pub no longer exists.
The parish of Chiddingly is located in the Weald and was considered a poorer area for farmimg as the land is heavy and poorly drained compared to the South Downs where the chalk soil is lighter, well drained and easier to farm. Consequently, it was more difficult for agricultural labourers to secure permanent employment at Chiddingly. Seasonal employment also meant less opportunities for women and children. The result was a greater demand on parish relief at Chiddingly. Richard Funnell was an agricultural labourer, living in a parish house, and probably experienced these difficulties.5
On 7 June 1841 Jane Burgess and Richard Funnell lived at Holmes Hill, Chiddingly, Sussex, England.6
Note that three daughters died between 1843 and 1844.
On 30 March 1851 Jane Burgess and Richard Funnell lived at Burnt Plot, Chiddingly, Sussex, England, living with daughters Phillis (15 years) and Mary (11 years).2
Jane was admitted to the Hellingly Union Workhouse on Friday, 10 Sep 1858 aged 63 years because of infirmity. Her class of diet was 6 (scale 1 to 9) and the number affixed to her paupers clothes was 23/8. The parish to which she was charged was Chiddingly. She was discharged dead on 29 Sep 1858 and was buried at Chiddingly on 1 Oct 1858.
Jane Burgess died on 29 September 1858 at Union Workhouse, Hellingly, Sussex, England, at age 60. Jane was discharged dead from the Hellingly Union Workhouse on 29 Sep 1858. She died of cardiac disease (4 months) and anasaica (3 months).7
Jane Burgess was buried on 1 October 1858 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England, "63 years old, Hellingly Union House."8,9
Although the place of death is given as the Hellingly Union Workhouse, it is probably correct to say the Hailsham Union Workhouse which was built c1836 and which catered for a number of parishes including Hellingly. The fact that it was built in a position midway between Hellingly and Hailsham probably led to it being referred to as the Hellingly Union Workhouse as well. Prior to 1835 each parish had their own workhouse and these were retained and operated after 1835. However, there was only one Union workhouse in each Poor Law Union. A task for the future is to investigate the surviving records for the Hailsham Union Workhouse at the East Sussex Record Office.

John Burgess married Silvester Fermor, daughter of Alexander Fermor and Elizabeth Fowle, on 17 September 1570 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.1
