Jane Burt

b. circa 1827
FatherIsaac Burt b. 22 Jul 1787, d. 5 Feb 1867
MotherAlice Ashdown b. 12 Oct 1792, d. 20 Jan 1854
Jane Burt was born circa 1827 at Sussex, England. She was the daughter of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown.
Identifying Jane's birth has been a problem. The only baptism that has been found is in 1847 at Hellingly, stating that she was the daughter of Isaac Burt (cooper) and Harriet (not Alice). Harriet was an earlier wife of Isaac (married 1808) who died c1813 and his second wife was Alice Ashdown (the banns for his marriage to Alice state he was a widower). It was assumed that the 1847 baptisms are therefore adult baptism, although it did not state this. The later adult baptism of Isaac Alfred Burt in 1849 (which gives his actual birth date in 1818) and definite religious non-conformity in the family seems to support this conclusion.
The subsequent discovery of Jane's emigration to Brazil, South America in 1851 where she married James Francis Chaplin and a family would indicate that she is likely the child of Alice Ashdown and not Heather Heathfield. She had her last child in 1865 and this would have been at age 50 years or more if Harriet Heathfield was her mother. Also, in documents in Brazil she explicity states that AliceAshdown is her mother.
The birth and original baptism for Mary Ann Burt, the first of the 1847 adult baptisms, has been found (bap. 1809, Heathfield non-conformist chapel) and confirms that her mother was indeed Harriet. However, Jane's original baptism has not been found and my conclusion is that she did have an adult baptism in 1847 with her sister Mary Ann but that her mother was actually Alice and this was not properly recorded in the register (the clerk probably assumed they had the same mother). Baptisms for most of Isaac and Alice Burt's children have not been found, and Isaac's will made in 1866 listing the children places Jane after Sarah and Elizabeth but before Harriet, indicating that her birth was probably c1822 .
There is another branch in her mother's Ashdown family which emigrated to the USA to join the Mormons in Salt Lake City, Utah. The indication of strong religious non-conformity in the family would explain the difficulty in finding baptisms in the Church of England records.
In the 1841 census Jane may be the person recorded as "Jane Burt, age 20 years, female servant, born Sussex" residing in High St, Lewes with the family of John Madgwick, grocer. There was another servant there called Lydia Verrall, also age 20 years. It must be remembered that for the 1841 census ages over 15 years were rounded to the nearest 5 years, so theoretically Jane could have been between 18-22 years old, putting her birth at c1819-1823. This would support her being the daughter of Alice Ashdown, not Harriet Heathfield.1
Jane Burt was baptized on 25 April 1847 at St Peter & St Paul, Hellingly, Sussex, England, adult baptism?
Jane Burt emigrated in 1850 to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, She arrived alone (with friends on board?) at Porto de Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on February 4, 1851. In the newspaper "O Rio-Grandense" on 5 February 1851, page 4, there is news of arriving passengers:
"Entries on day 4, coming from Liverpool (58 days travel), ship Ingles (English?) "Irene" - 187 tons - MWD - equipped 9 load coal - Carruthers Souza & C. British passengers: Elizabett Hooper, James Hooper, Mary Hooper, Jane Burt, Clement Busby Fox, A. Sinclair Maclveen, Riclara Dendy and 31 more settlers."
(Article found and translated by Angelo Figurelli, Sep 2014)
It is likely that she met her future husband, James Chaplin, on board the ship. James was in the merchant navy and could have been one of the crew.
Given the history of religious non-conformity in the family she may have left England for religious reasons although no evidence of this has been found and her 1847 adult baptism into the Church of England with sister Mary Ann has to be taken into consideration. Angelo writes: About religious beliefs, the Burt, Chaplin and Platt families are buried in the Protestant cemetery in my town. When Alice Chaplin Platt married Luigi Figurelli they only married in the civil registry, no religious ceremony, as they had different religions.
Jane's name was translated as Eugenia in Brazil.
Jane Burt married James Boyes Brownsmith Chaplin, son of Thomas Manley Chaplin and Evarilda Margaret Bradley, on 21 June 1851 at English Consulate, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Entry sighted (Vol 1, Page 89) by A. Figurelli. Jane was age 24 years. A witness was Thomas Benbow Philips who later founded a colony in Patagonia.
At the time of their marriage in 1851 James and Jane were living in the colony of Cambria, about 80 kms from the port city of Rio Grande (where all immigrants first arrived). In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there were three British colonies: Cambria, Dom Pedro II and Monte Bonito.
From 1858 they lived in Rio Grande.
According to Angelo Figurelli's reading of old newspapers, those who arrived on the "Irene" in 1851 were destined for the Dom Pedro II colony. So Jane Burt should have gone there before going to Cambria.
In her father's will made on 8 Dec 1866, Jane is referred to as "in foreign lands". She was still alive at this time according to the will.2
Jane Burt witnessed the will of Isaac Burt dated 8 December 1866 at Hellingly, Sussex, England.2
The information about Jane's family in South America has come from her descendant Angelo Figurelli who lives in Brazil:
Jane's name was translated in Brazil as Eugenia Burt and James's name was translated as Santiago Chaplin.
My city is the port of Rio Grande do Sul, where all immigrants arrived. Many immigrants came by Uruguay in search of better land.
Jane Burt baptized 3 sons on the same day, in the village of Povo Novo in Rio Grande - RS - Brazil. This happened in 09 February 1864, the children were Alberto, Isaac, Guillerme.
Rio Grande was a Portuguese colony. There were many errors in the documents due to the local language and also the translated names. For Example: William translated to Guillerme. This complicates the search.

Sarah Burt was born circa 1819 at Hellingly, Sussex, England; place of birth confirmed as Hellingly in 1851 census.1,2 She was the daughter of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown.
Although Sarah's birth or baptism record has not been found, her marriage to Charles Bedwell indicates that her father is Isaac Burt. She was also mentioned as a witness on sister Elizabeth Burt's marriage certificate, and she was working at the same house as sister Harriet in the 1841 census. The 1851 census confirmed her place of birth as Hellingly. Based on all this I am confident in placing her as a child of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown. (GGB.)

Edward Burton

b. 15 March 1792
Edward Burton was born on 15 March 1792 at Bermondsey, Surrey, England; DOB from Edward's apprenticeship records.1
"Edward Burton apprenticed as a waterman in Greenwich, Kent, just east of Bermondsey and across the Thames River from London. On 31 Dec 1807, there is a record of his "binding" to a Robert Phillips and his release from such binding on 26 Oct 1815. Thus, Edward apprenticed from the age of 15 to 23. The records go on to tell of a binding of an apprenticing waterman to Edward Burton in 1831. They also note numerous other Burton names in the Guild of Watermen and Lightermen who worked in the adjacent communities of Bermondsey, Greenwich, Westminster, Shadwell and Pimlico. Thus, it is likely that his Burton family had a tradition of work in the trade of waterman."
A waterman worked on boats carrying people or goods across rivers, in this case the Thames River.2
Edward Burton married Phoebe Barber, daughter of Thomas Barber and Mary Lipscomb, on 17 October 1819 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Bermondsey, Surrey, England, botp, witness William Burton and Elizabeth Jane Green.2
This marriage is confirmed in Mary Barber's will made in 1838 where she refers to her daughter as Phoebe Burton, widow.3
In June 1828 Edward Burton and Phoebe Barber lived at Fisher Lane, Greenwich, Kent, England.4
Possible burial for Edward Burton is 22 Jan 1837, abode: Stable Yard St, buried at Greenwich St Alphege, Kent, age 44 years. Phoebe is described as a widow in her mother's will made in 1838, so this would fit.3
