FatherEdward Burton b. 15 Mar 1792
MotherPhoebe Barber b. 27 Dec 1795, d. 27 Nov 1874
Sarah Ann Burton was born on 13 June 1828 at Greenwich, Kent, England.1 She was the daughter of Edward Burton and Phoebe Barber.
Sarah Ann Burton was baptized on 6 July 1828 at St Alphage, Greenwich, Kent, England.2
Sarah Ann Burton married Moses Jupp, son of Charles Jupp and Ann Ball, circa 1860 The marriage record has not been found and it is possible that it did not take place as no death has been found for Moses' previous wife.3
It is likely that their first daughter Ellen's birth is registered under the name Ellen Burton, as there are no Ellen Jupps registered at that time. There are some possibilities in the births index for Ellen Burton though.
On 2 April 1871 Sarah Ann Burton lived at 25 Judd Street, St Pancras, London, England, a widow living with her children Ellen (age 10 yrs) and George (age 8 years). Sarah's daughter Jane Eliza is not listed with them on the night of this census.4
Around 1873, Sarah placed her son George in a Barnados home. The reasons are unclear but it may be that being a widow, she simply could not afford to raise him. It is interesting that about 12 months afterwards, she emmigrates to Canada (departing Liverpool 16 Apr 1874 - possibly with Ellen) and with Eliza Jane departing early June to join them (together with over 100 young girls all bound for Quebec City). George was sent there by Barnardos about two weeks after Sarah departed. This was probably the plan from the outset. Strangely though, George seems reluctant to join his mother after arriving in Canada and remained in the "home children" programme for nine years despite requests from his mother to join her. They must have remained close though, as in the 1881 census George is living on the McClelland farm near his mother and her second husband Peter Gorbutt, who are on the Laidlaw farm both near Blyth, Huron County, Ontario.5
Sarah Ann Burton emigrated on 16 April 1874 to Canada departing Liverpool on the ship "Sarmation" and arrived Quebec City on 28 Apr 1874.6
Sarah Ann Burton married Peter Gorbutt, son of William Gorbutt, on 10 December 1875 at Thorold, Ontario, Canada, The marriage certificate confirms Sarah's parents as Edward and Phoebe Burton.6
Peter Gorbutt was a widower with six children from his first wife, Mary Ann Loft, who died age 32 years on 19 Feb 1872 from a miscarriage. Sarah Ann now assumed responsibility for this family.5
For the 1900 census, Sarah was visiting her daughter Jennie E Cockerline (Jane Eliza Jupp) in Bloomfield Township, Birmingham Village, Oakland Co, Michigan. She was recorded at this address as well as her home address in the Lake & Hume Townships, Huron Co, Michigan. The census return states that she has 3 living children.7
In 1900 Sarah Ann Burton and Peter Gorbutt lived at Lake & Hume townships, Huron County, Michigan, United States.8
Sarah Ann Burton died on 15 September 1902 at Michigan, United States, at age 74. The date was found on an "In Memorium" card handed down the family, but the place of death is unknown.9,10
