• Anecdote: Two possible candidates for deaths:
  Jan-Mar 1867, Lewes, Vol 2b Page 121, age 75 years (i.e. born c1792)
  Jul-Sep 1868, Hailsham, Vol 2b Page 40, age 76 years.

This earlier Henry married Mary Sargent at Battle, Sussex and emigrated to the USA in 1840 and settled in Huntington, New York. His headstone clearly shows his date of birth as 19 Dec 1799. He is buried at Huntington Rural Cemetery, New York, USA.²

• Anecdote: Chiddingly is one of those rare parishes where the 28 May 1821 census has survived with a detailed description of the inhabitants, similar in format to the 1841 census. Henry was living with his parents, Richard and Ruth Funnell, at Rooker, a large cottage :

  1. 19 Nov 1821 at Heathfield: Henry Funnell m. Rebecca Thomson, both of this parish. Rebecca was buried at Chiddingly on 23 Aug 1846 age 48 years. They had children: Rebecca, Henry, Lucy, John, Thomas. Jane, Mary Ann, Charles. Henry was a labourer. The 1851 census shows him a widow, age 50 years, born Chiddingly, with children Thomas, Jane and Mary A. This Henry might be the Henry Funnell born 24 Oct 1800 at Chiddingly (baptised 1 Jan 1801) son of Thomas and Sarah Funnell (based on having a son named Thomas).
  
  2. 12 Oct 1822 at Framfield: Henry Funnell and Martha Townsend, both of this parish. Martha was buried at Chiddingly on 21 Oct 1840 age 44 years. They had children Henry, John, Stephen, Caroline and Martha. Appears to have remarried Eliza as 1851 census shows this Henry as age 50 years, born Chiddingly. They had two more children: Eliza and Richard.
  
  3. 20 Dec 1822 (marriage licence only): Henry Funnell and Caroline FORD. Henry is of Chiddingly and Caroline of Rye (Ripe? - check). Children: Philadelphia, Richard, Arthur, John, William, Thomas(check), Walter, Tabitha. Henry died between 1841 and 1851. Henry was an agricultural labourer. He is age 45 years in 1841 census (rounded). 1851 census shows Caroline a widow, born c1805 at Ripe.

  The late Mr. James Bartlett, who met with a fatal accident in Mary-street, Unley, on Friday evening week, arrived in this colony 46 years ago. He was born in 1822 at Pitney, Somerset, England. He married in1l851 Miss Elizabeth Anna Culliford, who survives him, and shortly after came to South Australia in the ship Sultana. Mr. Bartlett first settled at Coromandel Valley with an elder brother,
  and after a few months at Wardlow Vale, near Belair, where he lived till six years ago, when he retired from active work as a gardener. The deceased gentleman was connected with the Wesleyan Church for more than 40 years, and was a man of broad religious sympathies. Mr Bartlett's relatives are remarkable for longevity. His father came from England to South Australia when 78, and lived four years afterward. A sister is still living in Unley 73 years old, a brother in Tasmania 85, another in England 83, and another, Mr. Samuel Bartlett, of Unley, 79. Mr. Bartlett leaves a widow, four daughters, and five sons. The daughters are Mesdames C. T. and G.P. Schober, of Hawthorn, Victoria ; Mrs E. Novice and Miss A. J. Bartlett, of South Australia; and Messrs. J.H. and A. E. Bartlett, of Fremantle, West Australia. The sons are Messrs. O. J., D. W., and E. C. Bartlett.³
