• Anecdote*: Peter Simpson is a descendant of James Wilkins and he writes:
  James came out to Australia landing here in Melbourne in 1853 with his wife Mary Ann (Ellen) Wise. They married at St Mary’s Church at Eastbourne Sussex in 1840, They went on to have 3 children here, 2 girls & 1 boy my Grandfather Frederick born 1862 near Rutherglen Vic . I was very impressed with your family website, we have a picture of a Sussanah Wilkins , James’s older Sister born 1810 (picture was taken in 1855- 65 ) & also a picture of her & her husband’s grave at Hailsham Sussex, my Grandfathers Sister & husband visiting it in 1910.
  After arriving in Melbourne, James & Mary moved about through some of the Gold rush areas as their next 3 children were all born at different places across country Victoria. Emma Wilkins was born at Dunnoly 25th December 1856 , Frederick Wilkins born 31st March 1862 at Gooramadda , Alice Wilkins born at Goorong 18th August 1864 . Gooamadda & Goorong are very close to Rutherglen & James’s Nephew Henry Hollibone lived there and it seems James worked for him at times . Hollibone family folk law thought James came out with Henry Hollibone as there was mention of a Mr Wilkins but we think there may have been a Joseph Wilkins that came out then , a son of Geoge or Joseph Wilkins born about 1830 as all we can find is a Joseph Wilkins died in Dunnoly aged 74 in 1904. There is talk on Ian McPhail's information that James had a Butcher shop in Gooramadda. On Frederick's marriage certificate he is listed as retired Farmer but we know he worked as a carpenter, farm laborer, so it could have been Joseph Wilkins that had the Butcher shop?, we cannot find any arrivals on shipping list etc. The Hollibone family said that there was a group of 6 single men that landed in South Australia & worked their way overland following the Murray River & Henry Hollibone was one , but given that Joseph was his Cousin we are not sure. We just haven't found the right links as in Eastbourne there were 2 Joseph Wilkins born around 1830 1 appears on the 1851 censes but Henry Hollibone does not. My Mother said her Father Frederick worked at a Butcher Shop as a very young boy & that they butchered stolen cattle for the Kelly gang and Frederick went to School with Kate Kelly the youngest sister of Ned , as the Kelly farm at Eleven Mile Creek was close to Gooramadda .

• Anecdote: According to notes from Ian McPhail (2012): James Wilkins migrated to Australia and who in turn was the father of Alice Wilkins who married William Hollibone Birch. The Birch, Hollibone and Wilkins families remained close and indeed there were many several cross marriages in all the families.
• Death*: James Wilkins died on 17 July 1896 at 87 Cowper Street, Footscray, Victoria, Australia, at age 78. He died of bronchia pnuemonia and cardiac failure.
• Burial*: James Wilkins was buried on 19 July 1896 at Footscray Cemetery, Footscray, Victoria, Australia.
