Thomas Godden

b. circa 1737, d. 1776
FatherThomas Godden b. c 1715
MotherElizabeth Hollingham d. 1754
Thomas Godden was born circa 1737 at Sussex, England. He was the son of Thomas Godden and Elizabeth Hollingham.
A baptism for Thomas Godden has not been found. However, a reasonable speculation is that his parents are Thomas Godden of St John's, Lewes and Elizabeth Hollingham who married at Kingston by Lewes in 1737. They subsequently had children in East Chiltington which matches with this Thomas Godden who had children there also.
Thomas Godden married Mary Thomas on 5 April 1758 at Westmeston, Sussex, England.
A Thomas Godden and Richard Godden were convicted at the Assize at Lewes in July 1763 of stealing goods valued at 7s 3d from John Stenning. They were sentenced to be whipped. (ASSI 31-7 32). This could be this Thomas and his brother Richard.1
Thomas Godden died in 1776 at Westmeston, Sussex, England.
Thomas Godden was buried on 21 May 1776 at Westmeston, Sussex, England, Thomas junior.2
The Sussex Marriage Index was searched 1700 to 1738 and the following marriages found:
10.4.1737 Thos Godden of St Johns, Lewes, and Eliz Hollingham at Kingston by Lewes.
27.8.1710 Thos Godden of Rye & Eliz Wilson of Udimore at Mountfield.
It was condidered that Mountfield and Rye were too far away for this to be a candidate.

The following burials are from the Westmeston registers:
26.1.1758 Elizabeth GODDIN and Sarah her base born infant.
25.9.1754 Elizabeth GODDIN, wife of Thos., Novington (a manor in Westmeston).
31.5.1770 Thomas GODDEN Junior.
20.11.1810 Mary GODDEN.
Note that the East Sussex Burial Index only has burials for East Chiltington for 1609 to 1699.
