Elizabeth Gunn

b. 17 October 1697, d. 1776
FatherStephen Gunn b. 14 Aug 1657
MotherElizabeth Bradford b. 1 Apr 1677
Elizabeth Gunn was born in 1697 at Brighton, Sussex, England.
Elizabeth Gunn was baptized on 17 October 1697 at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex, England, Elizabeth's baptims only shows the father's name. It is assumed that Elizabeth is her mother, as it is the name shown on Nathaniel's baptism in 1700.1 She was the daughter of Stephen Gunn and Elizabeth Bradford.
There are two possibilities for Elizabeth Gunn's baptism at Brighton St Nicholas:
17 Oct 1697 dau. Stephen Gun
30 Jun 1699 dau. William Gunn
Elizabeth's first son was named Stephen, supporting the 1697 baptism.1
Elizabeth Gunn married William Marchant, son of William Marchant and Ann Jacket, on 26 November 1721 at St Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, England, Sponsors WG; John HAMMOND of the same parish (Lewes All Saints.)2
Elizabeth Gunn is the aunt of Stephen Gunn who married Martha Killick who, as Martha Gunn, was the famous bathing lady of Brighton. Her portrait is hanging in the Brighton Museum and her grave is in the cemetery at St Nicholas church.
Elizabeth Gunn witnessed the will of William Marchant dated 17 October 1772 at Brighton, Sussex, England.3,4
Elizabeth Gunn died in 1776 at Brighton, Sussex, England.
Elizabeth Gunn was buried on 3 September 1776 at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex, England, widow.5
It is possible that William and Elizabeth had a son William whose baptism has not been found. The reason for suspecting this is that there is a William amd Mary Marchant in Brighton who started having children in 1755, followed by Stephen and Elizabeth in 1760, and Jonas and Mary in 1764. These were the only Marchant families in the baptisms register at that time. Also, it is almost inconceivable that there would not have been a son called William, given that would have been his father's name. Also, there is a burial of a William Jnr on 27 Dec 1763 (drowned) in Brighton which would explain why he is not mentioned in the will of 1772 (and there is also the burial of an Elizabeth Marchant, dau. of Mary, widow, on 8 Aug 1769). Note also, that daughters Anne, Martha (dec. c1760?), Mary and son Stephen (dec. c1770?) are not mentioned in the 1772 will, although their burials have not been found in the SFHG index of burials.
If that is the case, then William's wife Mary left a will that is of interest:
Mary Marchant 1784
Lewes Will A66 p53 dated 2.3.1784, proved 1.6.1790
