John Gladman married Mary Martin on 17 February 1774 at Laughton, Sussex, England, witnesses: Wm GLADMAN Rich VINE.1
This is the actual marriage that has been recorded. Note that no children of the marriage of John Gladman and Mary Martin have been found yet. Either John Gladman and Mary Martin are a different couple who left the parish soon after their marriage, or the marriage to Mary Martin is incorrect for whatever reason. I wonder if the name has been written incorrectly, and it should be Hannah Wenham? What is adding to the suspicion is that one of the witnesses is Richard Vine, and Hannah Wenham's mother's maiden name was Vine, although it is possible that Richard Vine was the parish clerk in which case he would have witnessed many marriages. Further work is required.1
There is a marriage licence on 27 Sep 1809 (Archdeaconry of Lewes) for a William Martin Gladman and Elizabeth Hope Aldridge. Could this William be a child of John Gladman and Mary Martin or a child of Mary's from a previous marriage or an illegitimate child of Mary's? On his marriage licence William is noted as a bachelor yeoman of Southover Nr Lewes.
There is also the baptism of a Frances Histed Gladman in East Grinstead on 12 Feb 1837 to a John Martin Gladman and Frances Gladman. His occupation is surveyor. His marriage is not in the SFHG marriage index.1
