This is the last Will and Testament of me Henry Akehurst of Lewes in the County of Sussex, servant to Mrs. Mason. First I order and direct that all my just debts, funeral expenses and the charges of proving and executing this my Will, be paid and discharged as soon as conveniently may be after my decease by my Executors hereinafter named. Also I give and beseech to each of my brothers, John Akehurst of Hellingly, my brother William Akehurst of Mayfield and my brother Samuel Akehurst of Pevensey, all in the said county, one hundred pounds a piece. Also I give and bequeath to each of the wives of my said brothers John and Samuel Akehurst, the sum of nineteen guineas a piece and to my sister in law Hannah, the widow of my late brother Thomas Akehurst deceased, the sum of nineteen guineas. Also I give and bequeath unto each of the children of my said late brother Thomas, that is to say Henry Akehurst, John Akehurst, James Akehurst, Stephen Akehurst, Elizabeth Akehurst and Harriet Akehurst, the sum of ten pounds a piece; and to each of the children of my said brother Samuel Akehurst that may be living at the time of my decease, the sum of ten pounds a piece, except his daughter Elizabeth to whom I give the sum of fifteen pounds. Also I give to each of the children of my said brother William that may be living at the time of my decease, the sum of ten pounds a piece. Also I give to each of my God children viz John, son of Thomas Holman of Hellingly aforesaid and John, son of George Bayley of Lewes, the sum of five pounds a piece. And to my fellow servant, Ann Tingley, five pounds if she shall be living in the service of Mrs Mason at the time of my decease, otherwise not. All which said legacies I direct shall be paid within twelve months next after my decease. Also I give unto my respected Mistress, Mrs Sarah Mason of Lewes aforesaid, a mourning ring which I request her to accept as a mark of my respect for her. Also I give unto my brother John Akehurst, my bureau and bookcase and to my nephew John Akehurst, son of my late brother Thomas, my watch with its chain and appurtenances. Also I give to the poor people of the Parish of Hellingly, aforesaid five pounds to be distributed amongst such of them and in such portion as my Executors shall think proper on Saint Thomas’ day next after my decease. And I direct that my remains shall be buried in a grave in the burying ground of the said Church of Hellingly and that a decent monumental inscription shall be placed over the same by my Executors. All the rest residue and remainder of my goods, chattels and personal estate after payment of legacies and paying expenses of executing this my Will, I give and bequeath to each of my brothers as shall be living at the time of my decease to be equally divided between them, share and share alike. And lastly I make constitute and appoint my said brother John Akehurst and my friend John Pitcher of Hellingly, Executors of this my last Will and Testament to each of whom I give the sum of five pounds as a compensation for their trouble.
