George James Burton Jupp was born on 14 August 1862 at 12 Cambridge Terrace, Agartown, Camden Town, Middlesex, England.2 He was the son of Moses Jupp and Sarah Ann Burton.1
In 1873 George was admitted to the Macpherson Home in London (Barnados) one year before he emmigrated to Canada with other Barnado children. The records sent on the Canada in 1874 state that "he has a mother in Canada who will most likely look after her son on arrival. He is from Dr. Barnados where he has been for a year. He is a fair scholar and is a truthful honest well behaved boy".3
George James Burton Jupp emigrated on 30 April 1874 to Canada at the age of 11 years in a group of 94 Barnardos children. Sailed on the "S.S. Prussian" and arrived Quebec City after 12 days.4
On arrival in Quebec City, George was transported to Belleville, Ontario, and was subsequently placed on a farm of a Mr Taggart, and then with a Mr Hodgin, both recorded as living and farming near the town of Blyth in Huron County, Ontario. He spent the next nine years as one of the "home children" on placements on farms in Huron County. Hand written notes by his caseworker show that during this time he was in regular contact with his mother who requested a number of times that he go to her. In September 1882 he is reported as living with her. In 1883 he moves west and settles in the Welwyn-Moosomin-Fleming area.5
