Sarah Humphries was born in 1846 at Finmere, Oxfordshire, England.
Sarah Humphries was baptized on 25 August 1846 at Finmere, Oxfordshire, England. She was the daughter of Benjamin Humphries and Elizabeth Bull.
On 7 April 1861 Sarah Humphries lived at Jevington, Sussex, England, with her father and step mother.
Sarah Humphries married Joseph Edward Meek, son of John William Meek and Elizabeth Mathis, on 1 January 1868 at Eastbourne, Sussex, England.1
Sarah ... "was very short and slight, with nearly black hair, blue eyes, a large nose and a gay but uncertain temper; an active, restless little woman; very clean, but full of whims and always chattering. A clean housewife, though a bad manager, unable to take care of money."2
On 2 April 1871 Sarah Humphries and Joseph Edward Meek lived at 3 East St, Eastbourne, Sussex, England, with two children.3
Sarah Humphries and Joseph Edward Meek were found on a passenger list on 20 June 1871 at New York, United States, with their child Moses.4
In 1877 Sarah and children returned to Eastbourne from the USA after the death of Sarah's husband, Joseph Edward Meek, in December 1876.
"After my grandfather's death my mother and grandmother lived together for two years and a half at Willingdon. We were very poor, I remember. There was no regular income apart from some small relief from the parish and my cousin's earnings as a carter boy, which were not great. Occasionally my grandmother did a day's washing or charing. My mother set up in business as a dressmaker, but I am afraid she did not prosper greatly. My grandfather had been paid sixteen shillings a week. In addition he had a cottage rent free. This had ensured us a regular, if plain living." (George Edward Meek.)
Sarah Humphries witnessed the death of Benjamin Humphries on 4 October 1878 at Lower Willingdon, Sussex, England; He died of pneumonia (6 days.)5
On 7 October 1878 Sarah Humphries lived at Lower Willingdon, Sussex, England.5
In the 1881 census, Sarah and George Mockett are shown as being married. However, in the book by Sarah's son, George Edward Meek, he says that after she died they discovered they weren't married.2
On 3 April 1881 Sarah Humphries and George Mockett lived at 57 Susans Rd, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.6
Sarah Humphries died on 7 October 1883 at 1 Victoria Terrace, Susans Rd, Eastbourne, Sussex, England, at age 37. She died of phthisis (2 years) (consumption.)7,8
Sarah Humphries was buried after 7 October 1883 at Lewes, Sussex (to be checked.)
Sarah was one of three surviving daughters of Benjamin Humphries and Elizabeth Bull. All three daughters died before the age of 40 years. Rose Hannah died in 1871 age 29 years of consumption, Ann Elizabeth died in 1872 at age 29 years of nephritis (a kidney disease) and anasarca (swelling of the skin due to liver failure), and Sarah died in 1883 age 37 years of consumption. Their mother died in 1849 in Finmer, Oxfordshire at age 34 years, and the cause of death was given as mucous irritation (14 days) and ulceration of the intestine.

It is reported that when their son James Middleton was age 7 years that he fell off the back of a horse and cart, knocked his head, and became deaf and dumb. He was put into a home for the deaf and dumb which the 1871 census reveals was in Margate, Kent. He always resented being left in the school and that the family did not have much to do with him. Could his accident have had some effect on his mother, as she died only a year later in 1865?
