William Little

b. 19 December 1797, d. before 1881
FatherWilliam Little b. c 1740, d. b 1813
MotherHannah Watson b. 2 Feb 1765
William Little was born on 19 December 1797 at Rackbridge, Hethersgill, Cumberland, England; Rackbridge is in Stapleton parish. The location is at coordinates Latitude 55.028133 (North), Longitude -2.822300 (West).1 He was the son of William Little and Hannah Watson.
We know from the 1881 census that his daughter Elizabeth was a cousin to Jane Little, daughter of John Little of Carlise in Cumberland. The will of Jane Little, confirms that William Little is her uncle and that Elizabeth Little is his daughter. Therefore William and John were brothers. The ancestry for John Little (a Quaker family) has been traced back to his parents William and Hannah whose children were all born in Carlisle. John Little was a schoolmaster and later an accountant. He left a substantial amount of money (approx 8,000 pounds) in his will and his unmarried daughters appeared to have held shares in a railway company. The wealth appears to have come via John Little's wife, Elizabeth Wigham, the great granddaughter of Lord Cuthbert Wigham. John and Elizabeth's daughter Jane left an estate valued at over 19,000 pounds in 1888. Unfortunately no-one in the family married so there were no descendants, and as a result the money was spread widely on Jane's death, with some properties passing to William's daughter Elizabeth (who never married) and then upon her death to her sister Jane Little.2
William Little married Mary (?) circa 1824.
If William and Mary are the correct parents for Jane and Elizabeth then there is a possible marriage: 5 Jul 1824 William Little married Mary Dean at St Peter, Liverpool. However, there are reasons to doubt this William and Mary as the parents as we know the family were Quakers who did not baptise their children (but did keep records of births). The fact that their children were baptised in Liverpool St Peter therefore creates some doubt. It is possible that the Quaker (non conformist) records for Liverpool will show a different family. Also, this William's age is given as 21 years which is a bit late. This is a work in progress.3
For the 1851 census there is a William (55 years) and Mary Little (56 years) in Wetheral, Cumberland as visitors to John Sewell (farm labourer) and his wife Ann and family. This is interesting, because their daughter Elizabeth appears to have moved from London (1861 census) to Wetheral (1871 census). William's occupation is commercial traveller and his place of birth is Brampton, Cumberland. Mary was born in Crosby, Cumberland.4
William Little was a gentleman on 9 June 1862.5
William Little died before 1881 at England.2
William Little witnessed the will of Jane Little dated 3 April 1881 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England; See source reference for copy of will - not yet transcribed.2

William Little

b. circa 1740, d. before 1813
William Little was born circa 1740; based on age at death.
William Little married Hannah Watson, daughter of James Watson and Mary (?), in April 1782 at Stapleton, Carlisle, Cumberland, England.1
In the front cover of a register of Quaker births, marriages and deaths is written a complete list of the children of William and Hannah - obviously written after their last child was born in 1803. This is the source used for the birth dates of their children, except where an earlier record exists then this is used if there is a disagreement in the dates (as for their first son John Little). There is another birth record for Jane giving date of birth as 27 January 1788 in records for the Society of Friends. These records confirm family stories of the early Ward or Little family being Quakers.2
The FamilySearch indexes list two marriages in Stapleton, Cumberland:
7 Apr 1782 William Little and Hannah Wilson
8 Ap 1782 William Little and Hannah Watson.
These are possibly the same marriage. Given that one of the witnesses to the birth of Hannah's first child was Mary Watson, I have assumed that the second marriage is correct.
Correspondence from Daphne Kennedy identifies a third marriage: William Little and Hannah Forrester on 20 May 1783 at Bewcastle Church. They are buried at Stapleton St Mary (1811 and 1837 respectively).1,2
In the Quaker records there is a burial of a William Little, age 97 years, on 11 Jun 1783 (buried 13 Jun) in the registration area of Solport and Carlisle. Place of abode is Hallees. This could be a candidate for the father of William Little who married Hannah Watson, although there are many William Little's around at this time.3
Three of William and Hannah's children were born at Rackbridge in Stapleton parish. The location of Rack Bridge is at coordinates Latitude 55.028133 (North), Longitude -2.822300 (West).
On 8 March 1806 William Little and Hannah Watson lived at Breckonhill, Kirklinton, Cumberland, England, This should possibly be Brackenhill.4
On 8 March 1806 William Little was a schoolmaster. This information came from the burial record of William and Hannah's son Thomas. Also noted was "not in membership" which probably relates to membership of the Quakers.4
William is noted as deceased on son John Little's marriage record in 1813.5
William Little died before 1813 at Cumberland, England.
