Jane Marchant

b. circa 1769, d. 28 April 1848
Jane Marchant was born circa 1769 at Sussex, England.
Jane's baptism has not been found. It is possible that her father's name was James Marchant as this was Jane's first child's name and it does not occur on Joseph Dunk's side of the family. If this is the case, her parents could be James Marchant and Elizabeth Mepham who married at East Hoathly on 7 Feb 1763. They had two children baptised at East Hoathly: Hannah (1763, buried 1791) and Elizabeth (1765) and further baptisms have not been found after this. Perhaps they became nonconformists and Jane was never baptised? The father James may have been buried at East Hoathly on 3 Jan 1777 and his wife Elizabeth buried 6 Jul 1779 (noted as a widow).
Jane Marchant married Joseph Dunk, son of William Dunk and Anne Wenham, on 17 July 1789 at Westham, Sussex, England, both of this parish (lic). Witnesses: James Gell and Alexr Langridge.1
There is an infant Mary Dunk buried in Westham on 27 Sep 1789 which could be a child of Joseph and Jane Dunk.2
On 7 June 1841 Jane Marchant and Joseph Dunk lived at Handcomb Street, Westham, Sussex, England, "Poor man". Staying with them was John Dunk aged 5 yrs.3
Jane Marchant died on 28 April 1848 at Handcomb, Westham, Sussex, England. She died of paralysis (4 years), age 78 years.4
The place of death on the certificate is recorded as Handcomb but should probably be Hankham.
Jane Marchant was buried on 3 May 1848 at St Mary, Westham, Sussex, England, 78 years old.
