William's name on wife Maria's death certificate, and his own death certificate, was William George Buckran Marchant. However, there seems to be a lot of confusion as to how the middle name was spelt. One wonders whether it should be Buckrill/Buckrell/Buckerell, an old Brighton surname (eg. Stephen Buckrell - 1625 Brighton Fishermen List - Sussex Genealogist and Local Historian June 1985 (Vol. 7, No. 1, pp4-6) - who also left a will (as Stephen Buckrill) dated 1691 and proved 9 Oct 1691 - his wife Anne Buckerell also left a will made in 1702 and proved 24 Nov 1703 - no mention of any Marchants in either will though.)

Maria died of cancer of the cervix in 1893. It is reported that her death was rather painful and that the cast iron rails of her bed were deformed as she gripped them to ease the pain. The family had to put straw on the road outside the house to deaden the noise from passing carts so she could get some sleep. Her married daughter Annie was left in charge of the family as she was the eldest child and the youngest, Violet, was only 2 years old.11
