Ruth Funnell

• Anecdote*: Also living with them as a lodger is Benjamin Funnell, a widower, age 79 years, pauper, born Ripe. If he is Ruth's grandfather (although it does not state this) then this tree does not have the correct Benjamin Funnell as her father. However, all other facts fit this tree, especially Benjamin's age at death of 36 years in 1833 and the discussion below will show that this Benjamin cannot be Ruth's grandfather:
  The lodger Benjamin Funnell would have been born c1772 at Ripe. There was a Benjamin Funnell baptised 5 Nov 1780 at Chalvington, son of Benjamin and Jane Funnell,who would have been 79 years in 1851. Chalvington is a very close neighbour to Ripe. Our lodger Benjamin was buried at Chiddingly in 1853 aged 82 years, giving a birth year of c1771 consistent with the 1851 census.
  As there are no possible candidates in the SFHG baptism index for a c1771 baptism we can accept the age variations (perhaps he was 8 or 9 years old when he was baptised?) and say they are the same person. This person would then be the Benjamin Funnell who married Elizabeth Smith on 26 Dec 1796 as it states Benjamin is of Ripe and the birth c1771 fits well with the marriage (he would have been 25 years).
  So all this strongly suggests that the lodger Benjamin Funnell living with Ruth Funnell is the one who married Elizabeth Smith and later remarried Ann French at Ripe in 1812. It is possible that he may even have had an earlier marriage at Ripe on 18 May 1789 to Mary Huggett. So the question is then: is it his son Benjamin who married Harriet Simmons in 1832 and fathered Ruth?
  That is, is Ruth's father:
  Benjamin Funnell born 30 Dec 1796 at Chiddingly son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth, or
  Benjamin Funnell born 3 Aug 1800 at Chiddingly son of Benjamin Funnell and Elizabeth.
  Earlier research has shown that the second Benjamin married Elizabeth Turner at Chiddingly in 1825. The baptism register shows them having children at least through to 1835 so this Benjamin cannot be Ruth's father. Hence the first is still considered the correct one.
