Rita E O'Leary

b. 1923, d. 20 January 2015
Rita E O'Leary was born in 1923 at Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, Wales.1
Rita E O'Leary married Frederick Charles Barber, son of John Barber and Alice Teague, in 1952 at Brighton, Sussex, England.2
Rita's son, John Barber, writes:
Rita was the youngest of a family of seven, and the only girl. The family were of irish descent and of course catholics living in a traditionally non-conformist ‘Chapel’ area. The church arranged for Rita to be sent to convent school at Salford when very young, where she was offered the traditionally stark alternative of a life either in the Order or in nursing. She chose nursing, so she was sent back to Ebbw Vale where she worked briefly in the cottage hospital before starting her basic training in Carlisle. From Carlisle she went to learn midwifery in Bristol and then taking up appointments in Bath and Cheltenham. She was then offered a ‘plum’ position as staff nurse at Hammersmith Hospital, London, and moved two years later to Brighton General Hospital as midwifery ward sister.
In Brighton she met Fred Barber and gave up nursing to marry him in 1952. At this point she became an Anglican.
Rita and Fred remained together until Fred died of cancer at Eastbourne in 2001. Rita stayed on at 10 Park Lane Eastbourne until 2004 when she moved to Chester to be near her son and his family. She lived at 19 Knightsbridge Court within sight of Chester Cathedral until December 2011, when ill-health and failing memory forced her to move to a care home at Mollington just outside the city of Chester, where she remains today.1

In 2001 Rita E O'Leary and Frederick Charles Barber lived at 10 Park Lane, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.1
In 2004 Rita E O'Leary lived at 19 Knightsbridge Court, Chester, Cheshire, England.1
In December 2011 Rita E O'Leary lived at Mollington, Chester, Cheshire, England.1
