Henry Packham was baptized on 3 March 1776 at Cuckfield, Sussex, England, surname spelt PECKHAM.1 He was the son of Henry Packham and Ann Penfold.
The 1851 census confirms Henry's place of birth as Cuckfield, and his age of 76 years gives a birth year c1775.2
Henry Packham married Barbara Richardson, daughter of James Richardson and Sarah Mockford, circa 1800 at Sussex, England.3
The Sussex Marriage Index and the original parish register for Clayton were searched for the marriage of Henry PACKHAM/ PECKHAM and Barbara but nothing was found. However, the baptism of the children to Henry and Barbera Packham indicates that a marriage did happen.
Barbara is considered to be Barbary RICHARDSON, bap. 25.10.1781 at Clayton, daughter of James and Sarah RICHARDSON. Both of the parent’s names, James and Sarah, were used for the children of Henry and Barbara, and this seems to be the only person in the area with the first name of Barbara/Barbary. Also, James Richardson buried 30.4.1783 at Clayton “who died at Wickham in this parish, affidavit Sarah Morley”, is in exactly the same place (Wickham) where Henry Packham is living according to baptisms of his children in 1814 and 1816.

The tithe map schedule shows that Henry was a tenant farmer and did not own the land.
Henry Packham was a retired farmer on 30 March 1851.2
On 30 March 1851 Henry Packham and Sarah Durrant lived at Layland's Farm, Keymer, Sussex, England.2

Henry Packham

b. circa 1745, d. 1810
Henry Packham was born circa 1745 at Sussex, England.
Given that Henry would have been born before 1750, the only possible baptisms from the SFHG index are:
*******
1. 13 Aug 1732 at Hurstpierpoint, Henry Peckham son of John Peckham and Susanna.
2. 30 Jun 1733 at Hartfield, Henry Packham son of Henry Packham and Elizabeth.
3. 16 Oct 1745 at Cuckfield, Henry Packham son of Thomas and Margaret Packham. (Note marriage 15 Apr 1740 at Hurstpierpoint, Thomas Peckham and Margaret Wood). This Henry died 1810 at Cuckfield ("age 64 years").
4. 2 Aug 1740 at Hurstpierpoint, Harry Peckham son of Henry Peckham and Sarah. (Note marriage 21 Feb 1737/38 at Pyecombe, Rev. Mr Henry Peckham and Mrs Sarah Norton of Hurstpierpoint).
*******
Of the above parents names, only Henry, John and Elizabeth were used for children's names; Thomas, Susannah, Margaret and Sarah were not used.
Henry's age at burial matches the 1745 baptism of Henry Packham son of Thomas Packham and Margaret Wood. However, I feel reluctant to assign this baptism to our Henry as the names Thomas and Margaret were never used in the family.1
Henry Packham married Ann Penfold on 27 March 1769 at Cuckfield, Sussex, England, both of Cuckfield.2
Henry's wife Ann died in 1782.
Note that another Henry PACKHAM of Cuckfield married an Ann BARTHOLOMEY of Clayton at Clayton on 17 May 1782. Witnesses were Wm BENNETT and Hannah PIERCE. The child Henry PECKHAM baptised 13 Sep 1782 is likely to be the first of theirs. The baptisms to Henry and Ann Packham after 1782 appears to be for a single couple only as they are all evenly spaced every two years. This lends support to the conclusion that the burial of Ann PECKHAM on 25 Aug 1782 at Cuckfield is for Ann Penfold, the wife of our Henry Packham.2
Henry Packham died in 1810 at Cuckfield, Sussex, England.

Henry Packham was born circa 1725 at Sussex, England.

The East Sussex Land tax assessment 1785 shows that the property known as Lyes in the south part of Cuckfield is occupied by "the estate of Harry Packham". The owner is Francis Sergison, Esq. Lyes ended up in the hands of his son Henry/Harry Packham of Cuckfield who married Ann Bartholomey in 1782 at Clayton. The 1785 assessment also shows a property known as "part of Webb's land" and "the other part" in the occupation of Harry Packham, probably the son Harry as this property is known to have also ended up in the son's hands as it is mentioned as his abode on some of his childen's baptisms. The owner of Webb's is Henry Wood.6
