Hesketh Davis Wells

b. 6 August 1806, d. 22 May 1873
FatherHesketh Davis Wells b. 1768, d. 12 Feb 1841
MotherAnn Beauchamp b. c 1774, d. 29 Jun 1852
Hesketh Davis Wells was baptized on 6 August 1806 at St Paul's, Deptford, Kent, England.1 He was the son of Hesketh Davis Wells and Ann Beauchamp.
In July 1817, Hesketh's father, also a Hesketh Davis Wells, was convicted of possessing Naval stores, and fines 30 pounds.2
On 29 Jan 1824 Hesketh Davis Wells entered an apprentiship whith John Small Sedger, to become a shipwright. The apprenticeship was for 7 years.3
Hesketh Davis Wells married Mary Ann Catherine Garner on 28 July 1835 at St Paul's, Deptford, Kent, England.4
Mary's will of 1842 mentions an indenture signed on the 25th July 1835 (three days before her marriage) between Mary and her intended husband, Hesketh Davis Wells, which is a marriage settlement; an agreement made at the time of marriage to protect the property she brought to the marriage. Marriage agreements were particularly important as all her property became her husband's on marriage. Marriage agreements ensured that she would be left with property and income if she was made a widow and that her assets would go to children of her blood if she died before her husband.5
Hesketh Davis Wells was a wood and coal merchant on 7 June 1841.6
On 7 June 1841 Hesketh Davis Wells and Mary Ann Catherine Garner lived at Broomfields, Deptford, Kent, England, with children Hesketh, 5 years, and Mary, 3 years. They have a servant Emily Whittaker, 25 years.6
Heketh's wife died on 3 November 1843 aged 27 years. She left a long will (5 pages).
Hesketh Davis Wells witnessed the marriage of James Stephen Wells and Elizabeth Mary Edgerton on 28 November 1844 at St Mary, Lewisham, Kent, England.7
It would appear that sometime between 1843 and 1846 Mary Esther Barber began a long term relationship with Hesketh Davis Wells, probably her employer as she is recorded as a domestic servant on her death certificate in 1858. Hesketh appears to have kept the relationship and the resulting six children hidden to some degree, as Mary and the children lived apart from Hesketh but in the same town of Deptford. She probably continued to work for Hesketh while living separately with her mother and the children. It is possible that Hesketh would have regarded the relationship with Mary as potentially damaging to his social and business interests, she being a lower class domestic servant but another possibility is that his marriage settlement with his wife Mary Ann Catherine Garner (the "indenture" mentioned in her will) may have held financial disincentives for him to marry again. Perhaps the marriage settlement meant that many of the assets that his wife brought to the marriage were now held in trust for her children after her death and Hesketh only had use of the assets subject to certain restrictions and not ownership ? To Hesketh's credit, he does appear to have supported the children he had with Mary Esther Barber and certainly seems to have assisted the boys get a start in the shipping industry as clerks. Two of the boys, Herbert and James, were to emigrate to the USA and create significant wealth from their own shipping line, the "Barber Line".
On 30 March 1851 Hesketh Davis Wells lived at 43 Broomfields, Deptford, Kent, England, a widower.8
Hesketh Davis Wells was a timber merchant on 30 March 1851.8
Hilary Darque writes: Things did not go well for Hesketh in his later years as he was declared bankrupt in 1869 four years before his death. The Morning Post of 18 May 1870 reported when referring to the bankruptcy that "the statement of accounts returns debts of £38,670 10s 3d against assets of £2,665" - a massive amount even those days! (One website I've consulted calculates this amount to be just over £17 million pounds in today's money.) The newspaper articles goes on to say that "The bankrupt, a man of advanced years, had retired from business, amassed a competence. In an evil hour he had been induced to rejoin the firm, as a sleeping partner, and from this his misfortunes had arisen." At some time, Hesketh Davis Wells had been in partnership with his brother, Robert Thomas Wells, who was also a timber merchant. Robert died suddenly in 1869, the same year as the bankruptcy, so a possible link here. It's not clear whether he was also in partnership with his son Hesketh James Wells who also described himself as a Timber Merchant. Either way, Hesketh Davis Wells Junior, unlike his father and his son, did not leave a will, presumably because there was no money to leave. (Source: Hilary Darque, email 14 Oct 2017.)
Hesketh Davis Wells was a timber merchant on 2 April 1871.9
On 2 April 1871 Hesketh Davis Wells lived at 43 Evelyn Street, Deptford, Kent, England, a widower, living with his son Hesketh J Wells, 35 years, who is a Ship Broker's clerk and also born Deptford.9
Hesketh Davis Wells died on 22 May 1873 at Greenwich, Kent, England, at age 66. "age 66 years."10,11
Hesketh Davis Wells was buried on 28 May 1873 at Family grave, St Paul's Church, Deptford, Kent, England.11
OBITUARY: The death of this gentleman, who is an old resident of Deptford, took place on Ascension Day. Mr Wells was well-known as having taken an active part in the affairs of Deptford. He passed through all the parochial offices. He was elected as a trustee of John Addey's Charity as far back as nearly 40 years ago. On the introduction of the Metroplois Local Management Act, of 1857, Mr Wells was elected as a vestryman of the No. 1, or North Ward of the parish of St Paul, Deptford and from that body elected as their representative at the Greenwich District Board of Works. Edward and Hannah had three adult children baptised in Hellingly in 1749 thus: 1749, May 7th baptised John son of Edward and Hannah Wenham born 3 June 1729 and the same day Anne, daughter of the said Edward and Hannah aged 18 on 15 May 1749 and William, son of the above aged 15 on 12 April 1749.

Edward Wenham died in 1767 at Hellingly, Sussex, England.
Edward Wenham was buried on 8 July 1767 at Hellingly, Sussex, England.
NOTE: In Hellingly there was also an Edward and Mary Wenham, and an Edward and Anne Wenham having children about the same time as Edward and Hannah. The first marriage for our Edward (to Elizabeth Fox) may therefore be suspect and needs further work.

Marriage banns for Hannah Wenham and John Gladman were published in December 1773 at Laughton, Sussex, England.1
There is no record of a subsequent marriage (which doesn't mean it didn't happen). Previous research puts one of the banns dates as 26.12.1773 with both "of Laughton". Although no marriage record has been found, there is a baptism 19.5.1776 of John, son of John and Hannah at Laughton (but no others).
There is also the burial of a Hannah Gladman, widow, on 26 Aug 1812 in Hailsham. All this indicates that Hannah was a real person.
