Giles Thorpe

b. 19 May 1577, d. 1632
FatherJohn Thorpe d. 1607
MotherAlice Bowett d. 1594
Giles Thorpe was baptized on 19 May 1577 at East Grinstead, Sussex, England. He was the son of John Thorpe and Alice Bowett.
Giles Thorpe married Rachel Parker on 27 May 1600 at Worth, Sussex, England.
The marriage has been transcribed in the SFHG Marriage Index as 2 May 1600 Rachel PARKER and Giles THANGEE, gent were married at Worth, West Sussex. The style of writing can make transcription difficult.1
Giles was sent to New College, Oxford in 1588 at the age of twelve (see "Alumni Oxoniensis"). The Oxford History volume on The Reign of Elizabeth, pp320321, says that the universities at this time were run down, corrupt in the election of scholars and fellows. So Giles was either very bright or his father bribed to get him in. Giles would possibly have been at Oxford in 1592 when the Queen visited there. The courses of study were limited to theology, law, Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy, medicine, mathematics, dialectic, rhetoric, Greek and Hebrew.
He lived at Ifield, a gentleman, and was buried there in 1631. His will was proved 5 March 1631 at P.C.C. (Perogative Court of Canterbury).
Giles Thorpe died in 1632 at Ifield, Sussex, England.
Giles Thorpe left a will made on 13 February 1631/32 at Ifield, Sussex, England.2
"In the name of God Amen, the thirteenth day of February in the seventh yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God King of England, Scotland, Firaunce and Ireland defender of the faith. I Gyles Thorpp of Ifield in the county of Sussex gent being weake in body but in good and perfect remembrance (I thank god for it) Do ordeine and make this my last will and testament in manner and form followinge first I comend my soul to Jesus Christ by whose merrittes alone I hope to be saved and my body to the earth to be buried after the manner of Christian buriall at the direction of myne executrix here after named. Item I give and bequeath to John Thorpp my eldest sonne five pounds to be paid him within on yeare after my decease. Item I give to Gyles the sonne of my said John Thorpp five pounds to be paid to him when he shall accomplish the age of one and twenty yeares the reason why I give not more to mine eldest sonne is that my freehold land descendeth to him after my death and the death of Rachell my lovinge wife to whom it is conveyed by good assurance for her joyniture duringe her life. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Alice Smallpiece one hundred poundes to be paid to her within one yeare after my decease neverthelesse my true meaninge herein is that if mine executrix complane that I give one hundred poundes to her or any of her children during my life after the date of these present then I give to her but five pounds to be paid to her within one year after my decease. Item I give to Rachell and Sarah the daughters of my said daughter Alice, to each of them five pounds to be paid to them when they shall accomplish the age of one and twentie yeares and if any of the said children dye before her legacy be paiable that then her legacye remaine to the surviver. Item I give and bequeath to Richard Thorpp my younger sonne five poundes to be paid to him within one year next after my decease. Item I give fourty shillings to the poore to be paid to them upon the day of my buriall. Item I give to John Bristow of Charlewood in the county of Surrey Clerke and to Allen Wallis of Newdigate in the said countie yeoman, my loving friends whome I appointe overseers to this my will to each of them tenn shillings to be paid to them within one moneth after my decease. All the rest of my goodes and chattelles whatsoever not before given my debtes and legacies paid and funerall expenses discharged I give and bequeath to my lovinge wife Rachell whome I ordaine and make my whole and sole executrix of this my last will and testament provided neverthelesse that if it shall happen my said executrix to bee married and take on husband (shee having a joyiture as aforesaid with it good meanes for her) then my will and full minde is that the one moytie or halfe of the whole sume of my goodes and chattelles which mine inventory shall amount unto after my debtes and legacies be paid and funerall discharged be equally devided to my said three children John Thorpp, Richard Thorpp, and Alice Smallpiece, and to the heires of them and each of them, and if any of them dye without heires of his or her body lawfully begotten or to be begotten before the time appointed for the payment of his or her said legacy my will and minde is that such legacie or legacies remaine and go to the surviver or survivers of my said children, and their heires as aforesaid equally devided. Item my will and meaning is that if my said executrix shalbe willing to pay the said legacy half mentioned at any tyme in the tyme of her widowhood that Shee have an acquittance for the discharge of what Shee hath paid, that Shee may not be in any danger to paye any legacye, or fee thereof twice. And if any doubt arrise concerning any word or intente in this my last will, I will that my said overseers or any of them (who fully know my mind) Shall explaine it) And I doe hereby revoke all former willes by me made, And I will that this present will shalbe reputed and taken for my veri true and last will. In witnesse whereof I have hereunto left my hand and seale in the presence of Gyles Thorpp, Benjamin Browne, John Bristow."
(Transcription by Jeremy Clarke of the Felbridge History Group.)
Giles Thorpe was buried on 20 February 1631/32 at Ifield, Sussex, England.
His estate was probated on 5 March 1632 at Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Kent, England.2
On 6 Jan 2012 Helen Wright writes: I noticed the entry saying that Giles studied at Oxford. I hadn’t heard of this before and checked it out. On looking I discovered that the entry certainly does look as though it’s our Giles. What really thrilled me was the further discovery that not only Giles went to Oxford. His brother Nicholas also went to Oxford on the same day to also study matriculation. Also Thomas had studied there a few years earlier, and John’s (1527-1607) grandsons also attended. The book is available from google.
There is a possible entry for John (1527-1607) too, although how to prove it is our John, is a different matter. It just reads : Thorpe, John (Thrope), B.A. supd. March 1537-8 See Foster’s Index Eeel.
The book Helen refers to is "Alumni Oxoniensis".
