Thomas Wilkins

b. circa 1719, d. 24 April 1781
Thomas Wilkins was born circa 1719 at Sussex, England.
Ralph Wilkins believes that Thomas was born in the Eastbourne area as he found a widow Wilkins being paid from the Parish funds in the mid 1750’s. Also the fact that Thomas was removed to Eastbourne in 1740 points to his father having been born there.
Thomas Wilkins married Susanna Carter, daughter of James Carter and Susanna Thomas, on 22 June 1740 at All Saints, Lewes, Sussex, England, Thomas is "of Glynde", Mary of the same parish (ie Glynde). Married by licence.1
There is a settlement certificate for Thos. Wilkins and wife Susannah from Glynde to Eastbourne in 1740.
Lewes Quarter Sessions 17th July 1740 (order dated 27th June 1740):
Complaint hath been made by the church wardens & overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Glynd to the same of the Parish of Bourne that Thomas and Susanna Wilkins lately intruded themselves into the said Parish of Glynd there to inhabit as parishioners contrary to the laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor, and are there like to become chargeable, if not timely prevented. Therefore we accordingly adjudge that the said Thomas and Susanna Wilkins legal place of settlement is in the Parish of Bourne.
Ralph Wilkins, a descendant of Thomas and Susanna writes: "My Grandfather Henry 1883 -1958 told me where the family lived when ordered to move to Eastbourne after the court judgement. This was a row of houses owned by the church and opposite the church. My Grandfather also told me the family originated from Laughton near both Glynde and Ringmer."2

The following appeared in the Sussex Advertiser 7th March 1757, page 4:
To be peremptorily SOLD
Together or in Parcels
(by order of the High Court .....etc )
Several Freehold and Leasehold Estates of Thomas Willard of Eastbourne, In the County of Sussex, Gent deceased, situate at Eastbourne, Horley, and Hailsham, viz....
.... Also a small cottage, with the Appurtenances, in Meads in Eastbourne aforesaid, now in the Occupation of
Thomas Wilkins.
(Extracted from a notice in last column of above newspaper by R D Wilkins August 2017.)
Thomas Wilkins died on 24 April 1781 at Eastbourne, Sussex, England.
According to Ralph Wilkins, the death date for Thomas came from the Eastbourne Library many years ago when it had a muniments room, where it had a copy of a book where every entry at St. Mary's church had been hand written by a local person. This was before any booklets or micro fiches etc had been made.
Thomas Wilkins was buried on 30 April 1781 at Eastbourne St Mary, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.3
