His estate was probated on 6 January 1852 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England.5
Comments relating to George Woolgar are included in the following:
Cottage, formerly the police station, in Eastdean, possibly acquired by the Gilbert Estate GIL/1/102 1910
These documents are held at East Sussex Record Office. Former reference: GIL/1/102
Contents:
1 The north and west parts of a messuage called Cocksbeach with garden (1r), formerly copyhold of the manor of Birling, formerly Burchett, quitrent 4d; described in 1879 as a police station
2 Messuage, shop, garden and piece of meadow (2a)
This bundle consists of deeds marked with numbers of two lots in the sale of the property late William Peter Ashby in 1896; for the printed particulars, see AMS 3288 and AMS 5829/79. Lot 4 consisted of property 1 above, lot 3 of the house and shop and lot 6 of the land in property 2 above, then called The Mound. Lots 4 and 6 were purchased at the sale by David Fowler, the tenant of the Tiger Inn. He seems to have sold 1 above, but his executors remained owners of The Mound in 1922; in that year their property held of the manor of Birling, GIL/1/106 below, was enfranchised and sold (GIL/3/129). There is no evidence that the Gilbert estate ever purchased either of these properties.
In 1748 Elizabeth Collingham, spinster, sold property 1 above to John Moore of Friston, shepherd and his wife Mary, with remainder to his heirs. Mr and Mrs Moore sold the property to Nicholas Willard in 1788 (1, 2).
Willard inherited the lordship of Birling from his uncle James Dippery in 1791, effecting an automatic enfranchisement of the copyhold tenement [see GIL/1/33 above]. In 1808 he sold the property to John West of Eastdean, yeoman, who sold to Mary Gladman of Eastdean, widow, in 1812. She mortgaged the property to John Gorring of Seaford, brewer, in 1814 and after her death the mortgage was assigned by her son James Gladman of Rye, shopkeeper, to James Woolgar of Eastdean, gent, in 1822 (3-7)
Gladman failed to make repayments and died in December 1826, whereupon Woolgar took possession of the property and died in March 1830. His surviving executor Charles Brooker of Alfriston, shopkeeper, died in 1843 and his son-in-law and executor George Woodhams of Alfriston, grocer, assigned the mortgage to George Woolgar of South Heighton, blacksmith, in 1845. Woolgar died in 1851 and in 1852 his executors (Thomas Stone of Newhaven, brewer, David Allwork of Rottingdean, brewer and George Cripps of Denton, miller), were joined by Gladman's daughter Ellen Gladman of Rye, spinster, to sell the property to George Ashby of Eastdean, miller and farmer, for the sum outstanding under the mortgage (9).
Premises 2 above were sold by Woolgar's executors to George Ashby of Eastdean, farmer, in 1852 (10).
Ashby left the property to his widow Elizabeth for life and provided for its division after her death. He died in 1872 and Elizabeth died in 1878.
The ultimate beneficiaries of George Ashby's will were his sons George Thomas Ashby (d 3 April 1876) and William Peter Ashby (one third each) and his daughter Louisa, wife of George Ashby, Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Goodwin (d 4 December 1870), his daughter Elizabeth, wife of John King (d 8 October 1871), and the children of his late son Richard Ashby (one third). In 1879 William Peter Ashby of the Manor House, Eastdean, farmer, bought the shares of the other beneficiaries (named). The estate also included two cottages in Eastdean on the road to Birling Gap, which George Ashby had bought from Louisa Colwell and John Hoole, clerk on 11 June 1855 and a piece of land (3r) near Friston windmill (11-12).
William Peter Ashby died in 1894 and his trustees proved his will the following year. The estate was auctioned in six lots in 1896 [for the printed particulars, see AMS 3288 and AMS 5829/79; lots 4 and 6 were purchased by David Fowler] (11, 12).
