Samuel Young

b. 22 April 1739
FatherSamuel Young b. 2 Mar 1708/9
MotherLucy Grayling d. 1780
Samuel Young was baptized on 22 April 1739 at Beddingham, Sussex, England.1 He was the son of Samuel Young and Lucy Grayling.
The following baptisms are possibilities for Samuel:
1. 22 Apr 1739 at Beddingham, son of Samuel and Lucy Young
2. 10 Oct 1725 at West Firle, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Young (an earlier Samuel baptised 1721/22 to same parents is considered to have died although nor burial record exists)
3. 27 Aug 1727 at Brighton son of William (an earlier Samuel baptised 1723, son of William, is considered to have died although nor burial record exists)
The first baptism is thought most likely because of the name Lucy being carried through to one of the daughters and also because of the later association of Lucy Young (1775-1827) with Heighton, the area where Samuel's father was born (at Denton next to Heighton) and also where Samuel's mother's family were from.
Samuel Young married Mary Sutton, daughter of John Sutton and Elizabeth Verrall, on 7 November 1763 at Eastbourne, Sussex, England.2

Samuel Young

b. 2 March 1708/9
FatherJohn Young b. c 1665, d. Nov 1719
MotherMary Chambers b. 27 Jul 1677, d. c 1719
Samuel Young was baptized on 2 March 1708/9 at St Leonard, Denton, Sussex, England.1 He was the son of John Young and Mary Chambers.
Possible baptisms for Samuel are:
1. 22 Apr 1691 son of Nicolas and Alse Young at Beddingham (too old?)
2. 12 Nov 1696 son of Samuel and Ann Young at Beddingham (buried 1 Dec 1696 at Beddingham)
3. 12 Jun 1700 son of Samuel and Ann Younge at Beddingham (married Elizabeth, left will proved 1736)
4. 2 Mar 1708/09 son of John and Mary Young at Denton St Leonard (most likely - Denton is close to Beddingham and John's will proved 1719 shows that he is the brother of Samuel Young of Beddingham who died 1689)
5. 1 Dec 1714 (born 14 Nov 1714) son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Young at Lewes St Thomas of Canterbury at Cliffe (married Mary Cornford, left will proved 1762)
6. 29 Nov 1702 son of John and Elizabeth Young at Seaford (buried 19 Dec 1703 at Seaford, son of John)
7. 4 Mar 1721/22 son of Samuel and Elizabeth Young at West Firle (too young for marriage in 1738?1,2)
Samuel Young witnessed the will of John Young dated 26 October 1719 at Newhaven, Sussex, England.3
Samuel was 10 years old when his father died in 1719 and it appears that his mother died before this. Samuel's uncle, Samuel of Beddingham (c1658-1736), was made a joint trustee responsible for the maintenance and education of Samuel and his brothers and sisters (refer John Young's will, 1719). It would therefore be reasonable to assume that Samuel spent his teenage years based in Beddingham under his uncle's supervision, hence he is noted as "of Beddingham" on his marriage. He continued to live in Beddingham after his marriage to Lucy Grayling. His son Samuel made the move to Eastbourne and married Mary Sutton there.
Samuel Young witnessed the will of Samuel Young dated 6 May 1732 at Beddingham, Sussex, England.4
Samuel is possibly the Samuel Young mentioned in the codicil of the will of Samuel Young (c1658-1736) and if so, was left 20 pounds. It also states that Samuel was a servant of William Hill of South Malling. This would have been before his marriage in 1738.
Samuel Young and Lucy Grayling obtained a marriage licence on 25 April 1738 at Archdeaconry of Chichester, Sussex, England.5
Samuel Young married Lucy Grayling on 25 April 1738 at Wiggonholt-cum-Greatham, Sussex, England, Samuel YOUNG is "of Beddingham" and Lucy GRAYLEEN is "of Angmering".5
