The went to see "A song to Remember", a story of Chopin’s life, at the local cinema in Albany Highway, Victoria Park (possibly the Broadway theatre – approx 1948). When they returned home Athol wanted to go and play the music from the show on the piano but his overbearing mother ordered him to go to bed.
He got up first thing in the morning and played by ear the music he heard the night before. He always wanted to be a concert pianist but his parents didn’t seem to share his enthusiasm.1
