The 1851 census entry for Mary gives her place of birth as Brighton. However, the 1841 census says she was not born in the county (Sussex). The occupation in 1851 is a good fit as her mother was a straw bonnet maker.4

Mary Barber died circa 1680 at Tonbridge, Kent, England.
The will of Mary's father, Thomas Barber in 1683 does not mention Mary, so it is likely she died. However, there is a marriage of a Mary Barber in Tonbridge on 21 Oct 1697 to John Goding (a cooper of Wadhurst). They appear to have had children in Wadhurst after the marriage under the name Godden (Sarah, John, James, Elizabeth). Also, a John Gooddin was baptised 1656 in Rotherfield. (www.familysearch.org)
So who is this Mary Barber? This needs further work to resolve this. Could she be a niece who came to live with the Barbers in Tonbridge to help the family after Thomas died in 1683?2,3

Mary Barber

b. 14 February 1718/19
FatherRichard Barber b. c 1673, d. 1722
MotherMargaret Wigzell b. 18 Jul 1688
Mary Barber was baptized on 14 February 1718/19 at Kemsing, Kent, England. She was the daughter of Richard Barber and Margaret Wigzell.
Mary's existence is evident from the will of her uncle, Thomas Barber (1749) although there is no baptism for her in Tonbridge. However, there is a baptism in Kemsing in 1718 of Mary, daughter of Richard Barber of Leigh. This is likely to be the correct baptism, as Richard and Margaret were married in Kemsing. Also, Richard and Margaret lived in Hildenborough, and could have been closer to Leigh than Tonbridge, and thus considered that they were part of Leigh. Although the baptism is very close to the baptism of Mary's sister Martha in 1718 in Tonbridge, there could be a reason for this (did Martha have a late baptism?). Note also that in the Kemsing parish register, there is a gap in the records after Mary's baptism, the next one being recorded on 14 Sep 1720, apparently following the induction of a new minister, or appointment of a new parish clerk, as the handwriting changes then.1
Mary Barber married Francis Grassum circa 1740 at England.1
Note that variants to the name Grassum could be Grassom, Grason, Grayson, Graydon or Graysoon.
Mary Barber witnessed the will of Thomas Barber dated 16 May 1749 at Tonbridge, Kent, England.1
On 16 May 1749 Mary Barber and Francis Grassum lived at Lewisham, Kent, England.1
Mary received 10 pounds from the will of her uncle Thomas Barber in 1749. The will states "Mary the now wife of Francis Grassum of Lewisham in the said County of Kent, Innholder". The will refers to Mary as a niece, not a sister, and she is listed with the children of Richard and Margaret Barber.1
