Thomas Farmer

b. circa 1520, d. 1558
Father(?) Farmer
Thomas Farmer was born circa 1520 at Sussex, England. He was the son of (?) Farmer.
Thomas Farmer married Margaret Woodgatt on 22 April 1543 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England, Margaret is "of Penshurst". Surname probably meant to be WOODGATE.1
In the Rotherfield baptisms register there appears to be another Thomas Farmer family having children between 1540-1550. Until this is resolved, the families may be somewhat confused.
There are two possible marriages at Rotherfield St Denys for Thomas Farmer and Margaret:
1) 22 Apr 1543 Thomas Farmer and Margaret Woodgatt of Penshurst
2) 5 May 1550 Thomas Farmor and Margaret Scot
The first is considered most likely for the following reason:
They had a son John who, together with son Daniel, is mentioned in the will. There is a John, son of Thomas Farmer, who was baptised at Rotherfield St Denys on 12 Jun 1547 (no mother given). There are no other John's in the baptism register. This implies that Thomas and Margaret were married before 1547, hence the 1543 marriage is the correct one (assuming no missing baptisms for other John Farmers!).
Regarding the second Thomas Farmer, it is considered that he is the one referred to as "Thomas Farmer of Mark Cross", son of Robert Farmer, who was buried 5 Jun 1590 at Rotherfield and left an admon (ESRO: PBT 1/3/2/114J) naming his son Alexander as administrator.
There appears to be a third Thomas Farmer son of Adam Farmer mentioned in the Rotherfield manor court held 1559: "At this court comes Thomas Farmer son of Adam Farmer and parays leae to let 1 messuage 1/2 soyne of ferling of Frith containing 10 acres more or less to Alex Quaife for space of 4 years following the Feast of Ann B & M to the end of 4 years which per 2/- fine is granted. And Thomas Farmer comes & prays lease to let half soyne of Frith ferling containing 10 acres more or less for 5 years to Andrew Skinner from said Feast by fine 12d."
Thomas Farmer died in 1558 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.
Thomas Farmer left a will made on 10 August 1558 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.2

At the Rotherfield manor court held 12 Dec 1558:
At this court it is known that Thomas Fermor since last court surrendered into the lord’s hand by acceptance of George Maynard, deputy bedell in presence of John Fermor & Stephen Chintinge a cottage & 15 acres land upon Rotherfield Hill of assart, viz. to use of Margaret Fermor wife of the said Thomas for the term of her life to ….? From that person to John Fermor son of Thomas & his heirs under condition however that the said Margaret does not claim or sell any title, marriage dowry or jointure or other way ….? whatsoever after the age of 21 years of Daniel Farmer son of the said Thomas which the lord etc. fine 20d
This would imply that Thomas FERMOR had died before the court meeting, 12 Dec 1558.3

William Farmer

b. circa 1521, d. 1580
FatherJohn Farmer b. c 1495
William Farmer was born circa 1521 at Sussex, England. He was the son of John Farmer.
It is known from the will of John Fermor (1558) that he had a brother William who had a daughter Margaret (mother's name unknow, presumed to be Alice based on the marriage of a William Farmer and Alice May in 1554/55. The connection then to the William Farmer who died in 1580 and whose probate was granted 12 Jan 1580/81 is somewhat speculative as explained below.
William Farmer married Alice May on 22 March 1555 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England, (Note: 22 Mar 1554/55.)1
William Farmer witnessed the will of John Farmer dated 13 October 1558 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.2,3
William Farmer married Elizabeth (?) circa 1570 at England.
William Farmer died in 1580 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.
William Farmer was buried on 29 November 1580 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.4
His estate was probated on 11 January 1581 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England, (11 Jan 1580/81.)5
Adminstration of the goods of William Farmer of Rotherfield / was committed on the 11th January to Elizabeth his relict […] [sworn?] £17 13s / Farmer of Rotherfield.
There is no William FARMER/FERMOR marriage to an Elizabeth in the Sussex Marriage Index. If this probate is for this William Farmer then it has to be assumed that William's first wife Alice died and he remarried (note that there is no burial for an Alice FARMER or Elizabeth FARMER at Rotherfield in the SFHG Burial Index).
At the Rotherfield manor court held12 March 1587/88:
William Farmer who dies held to him & his heirs 1 parcel of Strabland at Rotherfield Hill of assart of Townehyll. Comes John Farmer eldest son & heir & prays admittance etc.
It is very possible that this entry relates to this William FARMER who died 1580, even though it was dated 1587/88. It was not unusual for inheritance transactions such as this to occur some years after the death. There are no other William FARMER burials in the SFHG Burial Index for Rotherfield between 1580 and 1587. John FARMER is likely to be the one baptised 5 July 1562 at Rotherfield, son of William (mother not named).
One could speculate further that based on the eldest son’s name of John, that this William was the brother of John FERMAR who died c1559 and left a will made 13 Oct 1558, proved 20 Mar 1558/59 (ESRO: PBT 1/1/4/305A). In this will John FERMAR mentions his brother William FARMER and his daughter Margaret. A Margaret FERMER was baptised 6 April 1555 at Rotherfield, daughter of William (SFHG Baptisms Index).6
