  In the name of God Amen The Thirtith day of July in the fourth yeere of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord James by the grace of god of England France & Ireland Kinge Defender of the fayth etc and of Scotland the nyne & thirtith I Richard Burte of Staplefield in the parrishe of Cuckfielde in the County of Sussex yeoman beinge sick in Body but of perfect remebrance thankes bee given to Allmighty god Doe make and ordeyne this my last will and Testament in manner & forme followinge First I Comend my Soule unto Allmighty god my Creator & Jesu Christe my sole and onely Redeemer, by whose pretious Death on the Crosse throughe whose mercyes I am fully persuaded of the forgive-nesse of all my sinnes & imputacions of his perfect righteousnes to my eternall salvacion in the resurreccion of the iust at the generall Judgement of all the world; As for my Body I referre yt as dust to dust to bee buried in any Convenient place in the Churchyard of Cuckfield, And for my goodes wherewith god hath blessed mee that noe occasion of strife or unkindnes may arise after my death I dispose them as followeth First I give and bequeath towardes the reparacions of the parrishe Churche of Cuckfield six shillinges eyght pence, Item I give and bequeath to the poore people of the same parrishe six shillinges eyght pence to bee bestowed at the discrecion of my Executor and overseers Item I will and bequeath to Walter Burte my eldest sonne all my freehold Landes lyinge & beinge in Cuckfield in the County of Sussex by what name or names soever they bee Called and to his heires & Assignes for ever, exceptinge out of the same as hereafter followeth vizt the thirdes of all my said freehold land which my will & mynde is that Joane my wife shall have & enioye duringe her naturall life with the Chamber & Garret lofte over the Hall in parte of her thirdes with free liberty of infresse egresse & Regresse into and from the same at her will and pleasure And also sufficient Lodgeboote Carteboote fireboote & ploweboote to bee expended onely in & uppon the premisses & not elswhere; And also my will is further that Joane my said wife shall have & enioye all my said freehold landes
  one whole yeere next after my decease with all the profittes and Comodityes there uppon growinge and arisinge in and uppon the premmisses exceptinge the woodes onely. Item I will and bequeath unto my said sonne Walter Burt, A Joyned bedsteddle A Table with A frame A forme and all the benches as they now stand in the Parlor; Also I give unto him my great sawe and all my other workinge tooles. Item I give & bequeath unto my five Daughters unmarried vizt Jane Burte the elder, Elizabeth Burte, Dorathye Burte, Jane Burte the younger & Tymothia Burte to every of them the somme of Fifteene poundes A peece to bee payd unto them at theire severall ages of one & Twenty yeeres or the day of theire marriages whether11 Sic shall first happen; And yf yt shall happen any of my said Daughters to dye before they shall accomplishe theire full age of one and Twenty yeeres or day of theire marriages that then my will is that the porcion of such Daughter or Daughters soe Dyinge shalbee equally devided amongest the resydue of my said five Daughters then livinge. Item I give & bequeathe unto Thomas Burte my sonne the some of Thirty Poundes of good & lawfull money of England To bee payd unto him by Walter Burte my sonne within three yeeres next after my decease; And yf my said sonne Walter Burte shall refuse to pay unto the said Thomas Burt my sonne the said some of Thirty poundes within the tyme before limmited or otherwise shall not give good security unto the said Thomas for the true payment of the said some within one moneth next after my decease, That then my will and mynde is, that yt shall & maybee lawfull to & for the said Thomas to have full liberty to fell Cutt downe & Carry away so much wood as shall amounte unto the some of Thirty poundes at the rate of three shillinges for every Cord of wood & Ten Shillinges for every loade of Timber. Item I give & bequeath unto Joane Ashfold my Daughter & to her three Children vizt Jane, Richard and William Ashfold to eyther of them five shillinges A peece, All the residue of my goodes unbequeathed my debtes beinge payd and my funerall discharged I will & bequeath unto Joane my faythfull and welbeloved wife whome I make my sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament Provided allwayes that yf my said wife shall fortune to marrie agayne before my said Daughters shall accomplishe their full age of one and Twenty yeeres or Day of theire marriages, Then my will is that my said wife shall before her marriage agayne become d with good suretyes unto my overseers in such A reasonable some of money as shall seeme expedient porcion; And I hartely intreate Edmund Betchly, Nicholas Burte of Brantridge, Nicholas Burte of Clevers Walter Burte and William Ashfold to bee Overseers of this my last will & Testament.
