This person is a work in progress. The marriage to Sarah Colbran in 1819 was considered a possibility but is unlikley as the John who married Sarah has a consistent age of c1798 in the census records.
Two possible candidates for deaths:
Jan-Mar 1867, Lewes, Vol 2b Page 121, age 75 years (i.e. born c1792)
Jul-Sep 1868, Hailsham, Vol 2b Page 40, age 76 years.
There may be more. There are four baptisms of a John Funnell in 1792: in Chiddingly, Fletching, Laughton & Hamsey.

The connection of this John Funnell to Richard Funnell (i.e. as proposed brothers) is not proven and has been put here to assist with further research to prove or disprove the link.
Factors in favour of the connection are:
1. John Funnell is "of Ripe" at his marriage in 1790, as is Richard for his marriage in 1792.
2. A DNA match with a descendant of Phillis Funnel's illegitimate child, John Funnell, born 1819 at Chiddingly. Phillis is presumed to be the daughter of this John Funnell (which may or may not be correct).
Also, the children listed here probably come from more than one family. All this is a work in progress to try and prove or disprove the connection.

FatherRichard Funnell b. c 1765, d. 1848

Richard Funnell was born on 14 August 1794 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.1,2 He was the son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth Inkpen.
Richard Funnell was baptized on 4 October 1794 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.1
Marriage banns for Richard Funnell and Jane Burgess were published on 21 April 1816 at Hellingly, Sussex, England; The banns for their marriage were read April 21,28 and May 5, 1816 at Hellingly and read:
"Richard Funnell of parish of St John Under The Castle in Lewes, bachelor and Jane Akehurst Burgess of this parish, spinster."
The banns for Jane's marriage refer to her as Jane Akehurst Burgess. Although she was born illegitimate as a Burgess, she was known as Akehurst. Birth certificates for her children have her maiden name as Akehurst.
Richard Funnell married Jane Burgess, daughter of John Akehurst and Maria Burgess, on 9 May 1816 at St John sub Castro, Lewes, Sussex, England, Richard is of this parish; Jane is of Hellingly.3
Richard and Jane's first child was baptised at Hellingly (Jane's place of birth) and subsequently at Chiddingly. However, they do not appear in the 28 May 1821 census for Chiddingly. The baptisms of their children Jane (1822) and John (1824) at East Hoathly suggest they may have been living there at the time. From 1826 the baptisms resume at Chiddingly though.4
Richard Funnell was a labourer on 26 October 1828.
The 1839 tithe map survey identifies the location of Richard and Jane's cottage and garden at Holmes Hill as plot 810 near the intersection of the Lewes Road (now the B2124) and the road running between Whitesmith and Golden Cross (now the A22). The owner of the property was the parish, indicating that this was probably subsidised by the parish and part of their overall poor relief programme. The tithe map shows that the Bat & Ball pub is located at that intersection (on Lewes Rd) but the pub no longer exists.
The parish of Chiddingly is located in the Weald and was considered a poorer area for farmimg as the land is heavy and poorly drained compared to the South Downs where the chalk soil is lighter, well drained and easier to farm. Consequently, it was more difficult for agricultural labourers to secure permanent employment at Chiddingly. Seasonal employment also meant less opportunities for women and children. The result was a greater demand on parish relief at Chiddingly. Richard Funnell was an agricultural labourer, living in a parish house, and probably experienced these difficulties.5
On 7 June 1841 Richard Funnell and Jane Burgess lived at Holmes Hill, Chiddingly, Sussex, England.6
Richard Funnell was an agricultural labourer on 7 June 1841.
Richard Funnell witnessed the marriage of William Morris and Eleanor Funnell on 4 October 1846 at The Parish Church, Uckfield, Sussex, England.7
On 30 March 1851 Richard Funnell and Jane Burgess lived at Burnt Plot, Chiddingly, Sussex, England, living with daughters Phillis (15 years) and Mary (11 years).2
Richard Funnell was an agricultural labourer on 30 March 1851.
Richard Funnell died on 12 March 1858 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England, at age 63. Paralysed for 3 months prior to his death.8

Richard Funnell

b. circa 1765, d. 1848
FatherUnknown Funnell b. c 1735
Richard Funnell was born circa 1765 at Sussex, England; ages from census and death records give a birth year ranging from c1765 to c1769. He was the son of Unknown Funnell.
The only possibilities for Richard's baptism found so far (from the SFHG baptism index between 1755 and 1770) are:
20 Jan 1760 at Barcombe, Richard son of William and Jane FUNNELL (note: Jane FUNNEL buried at Barcombe 1803 age 76 yrs).
8 Feb 1773 at Chiddingly, Richard FUNNELL baptised (an adult). No parents given.
21 Aug 1775 at Chiddingly, Richard DUNK FUNNELL, illegitimate son of Elizabeth FUNNELL. (Interesting but probably a bit late for our Richard FUNNELL given that he married in 1792 and his ages quoted at death and in census's consistently indicate an earlier birth by about 10 years).
On his marriage record, Richard is stated as "of Ripe" suggesting he may have been born there. However, there is no baptism record at Ripe for him. There is a tantalising record in an earlier generation though:
Richard FUNNEL baptised at Ripe 25 Dec 1699 son of Rachel FUNNEL (base born).1
Marriage banns for Richard Funnell were published on 24 June 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, England; banns read on 24 June, 1 July and 9 July 1792.2
Richard Funnell married Elizabeth Inkpen, daughter of John Inkpen and Sarah Gladman, on 9 July 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, England, Richard is "of Ripe" and Elizabeth is age 23 year "of Laughton", surname INKPIN. Witnesses: Benjamin Coalman and John Vine.3
Richard's first wife Elizabeth Inkpen died in 1809 aged 40 years.
Richard Funnell married Ruth Sharrard on 6 January 1813 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England, (Ruth JENNER) both of this parish.3
Richard's second marriage was to Ruth Jenner, a widow, although the marriage record does not identify her as such. Richard was her third husband, her previous husband, Stephen Jenner, died in 1812 at Chiddingly and before that, her first husband, John Hammond, died in 1789 at Chiddingly.
Ruth had eleven children in total, although none with Richard Funnell.
Richard Funnell was a brick maker in 1821.4
Chiddingly is one of those rare parishes where the 28 May 1821 census has survived with a detailed description of the inhabitants, similar in format to the 1841 census. Richard and Ruth were living at Rooker, a large cottage :
Richard Funnell 56 yrs Brickmaker; Ruth Funnell 63 yrs; Henry Funnell 21 yrs; Stephen Funnell 13 yrs; Edward Jenner 12 yrs; George Jenner 9 yrs.4
On 7 June 1841 Richard Funnell lived at The Street, Chiddingly, Sussex, England, a widower age 73 years, living with his widowed son Henry and children John (15 years), Caroline (11 years) and Martha (5 years).5
Richard Funnell died in 1848 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England.
Richard Funnell was buried on 5 January 1848 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England, "Abode: Hailsham Workhouse; age 79 years."6,7
Richard was living in the Hailsham Union workhouse when he died, according to the Chiddingly parish burials register. However, there is no discharge recorded in the Hailsham Union workhouse records, nor the register of deaths for the Hailsham Union, nor can his death certificate be found. It may be that he was living in one of the old workhouses, not the new Union workhouse.8

Ruth Funnell

b. 4 November 1832
FatherBenjamin Funnell b. 30 Dec 1796, d. 1833
MotherHarriet Simmons
Ruth Funnell was baptized on 4 November 1832 at St Bartholomew, Chalvington, Sussex, England.1 She was the daughter of Benjamin Funnell and Harriet Simmons.
Ruth Funnell was convicted of larceny as a servant and sentenced to four months imprisonment. in 1848.2
On 30 March 1851 Ruth Funnell lived at Goosenest, Chiddingly, Sussex, England, Living with her mother's new family as a lodger, aged 18 years, a servant (out place), born Chiddingly.3
Also living with them as a lodger is Benjamin Funnell, a widower, age 79 years, pauper, born Ripe. If he is Ruth's grandfather (although it does not state this) then this tree does not have the correct Benjamin Funnell as her father. However, all other facts fit this tree, especially Benjamin's age at death of 36 years in 1833 and the discussion below will show that this Benjamin cannot be Ruth's grandfather:
The lodger Benjamin Funnell would have been born c1772 at Ripe. There was a Benjamin Funnell baptised 5 Nov 1780 at Chalvington, son of Benjamin and Jane Funnell, who would have been 79 years in 1851. Chalvington is a very close neighbour to Ripe. Our lodger Benjamin was buried at Chiddingly in 1853 aged 82 years, giving a birth year of c1771 consistent with the 1851 census.
As there are no possible candidates in the SFHG baptism index for a c1771 baptism we can accept the age variations (perhaps he was 8 or 9 years old when he was baptised?) and say they are the same person. This person would then be the Benjamin Funnell who married Elizabeth Smith on 26 Dec 1796 as it states Benjamin is of Ripe and the birth c1771 fits well with the marriage (he would have been 25 years).
So all this strongly suggests that the lodger Benjamin Funnell living with Ruth Funnell is the one who married Elizabeth Smith and later remarried Ann French at Ripe in 1812. It is possible that he may even have had an earlier marriage at Ripe on 18 May 1789 to Mary Huggett. So the question is then: is it his son Benjamin who married Harriet Simmons in 1832 and fathered Ruth?
That is, is Ruth's father:
Benjamin Funnell born 30 Dec 1796 at Chiddingly son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth, or
Benjamin Funnell born 3 Aug 1800 at Chiddingly son of Benjamin Funnell and Elizabeth.
Earlier research has shown that the second Benjamin married Elizabeth Turner at Chiddingly in 1825. The baptism register shows them having children at least through to 1835 so this Benjamin cannot be Ruth's father. Hence the first is still considered the correct one.
