Jane's father is given as Robert Barber, cabinet maker, and James' father is James Goldsmith, whitesmith. Witnesses are James Thompson and ... Hayman(?). They would have both been 17 years old when they were married, with Jane expecting. It is possible that the marriage took place in London to avoid embarrassment and that they stayed there until the first child was born before returning to Brighton.3
On 30 March 1851 James Herbert Goldsmith lived at 52 Tillington Street, St Johns The Evangelist, Westminster, Middlesex, England, with wife Ann and children Samuel (9 yrs), James (6 yrs) and Mary (4 yrs.)1
James Herbert Goldsmith was a smith on 30 March 1851.1
James Herbert Goldsmith married Ann Hoather, daughter of George Hoather and Ann Edstrom, on 13 June 1852 at St John the Evangelist, Westminster, London, England, James is aged 28 or 26 years, widower, and gives his occupation as "smith", and his father's name as James Goldsmith, also a smith. Ann is aged 22 years and gives her father name as George Hoather, a cutler.5
James Herbert Goldsmith and Ann Hoather were found on a passenger list on 13 January 1853 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. James and Ann Goldsmith departed London and arrived on the ship "Six Sisters" with their three children Samuel, James and Mary.6
The following notes on the Goldsmith family in Australia were provided by Di Christensen of Melbourne, Australia:
James Herbert Goldsmith was 28 years old when he, with his second wife Ann aged 22 years and James' children from his first marriage - Samuel 10, James 7 and Mary Abigail 5 years - arrived at Point Henry, Corio Bay in the Dutch ship the Six Sisters (Zes Gezusters) in January 1853 from Brighton, Sussex, England. After some time in Geelong, the family travelled to the gold diggings at Ballarat where they settled. At the time of the Eureka Uprising the Goldsmith family were at Bakery Hill, Ballarat East. James was engaged in the saw milling business which was a prosperous undertaking in those days. Ann married again in May 1883 to George Havens, a musician from Long Island, USA. They were married by Martin Hosking, the town Missionary.
At one time James owned a saw mill at Bullarook just out of Ballarat according to the police report attached to his committal to the Lunatic Asylum.
On 18 Sep 1877 James was detained by the police in Ballarat after having been found "wandering at large". Their report said that he was destitute, of no occupation, affected with paralysis and intoxicated. He was held in the Ballarat watchhouse where he was examined by medical practitioners and was committed to the Lunatic Asylum in Kew, Melbourne where he was admitted on 19 September. The later coroner's inquest is more specific about his condition on admittance, saying that he had dementia and paralysis of the left side. His residence in Ballarat was given as Ascot Street.
He is recorded in the patient register of the Kew Asylum. The later coroner's inquest states that upon admission he was sent to a hospital and after a few days was able to sit up in an easy chair. On 11 November he was ordered back to bed on account of symptoms of diarrhoea. He deteoriated from this and died.
James Herbert Goldsmith died on 16 November 1877 at Lunatic Asylum, Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at age 53. He died at 9:30am of disease of the brain and pleuro pneumonia (post mortem conducted).7
A coronial inquest into his death was held on 17 Nov 1877.
In all the documentation regarding James' admission to the Kew Asylum and his subsequent death and burial, there is no evidence that his wife or any of his children were aware of these events. The original documentation from the Ballarat police on 18 Sep 1877 just states "has sons and daughters in the Colony but unknown to S. Con. Cowley".
James Herbert Goldsmith was buried on 17 November 1877 at Melbourne General Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.7
