On the night of the census, Sunday, April 7th 1861, 25 year old Leading Seaman William Griffiths was on board HMS “Firebrand” at Carthagina near Granada, South America. "Firebrand" was a paddle frigate commissioned in 1842 and was the first steam ship commissioned in the Royal Navy.4
