Thomas Gladman Shelley

b. 17 December 1775, d. 1839
FatherThomas Gladman b. 29 Jan 1756, d. 1820
MotherMary Shelley
Thomas Gladman Shelley was baptized on 17 December 1775 at West Firle, Sussex, England, "Thomas Gladman SHELLY son of Mary Shelly." He was the son of Thomas Gladman and Mary Shelley.
There is some circumstantial evidence for Thomas being the son of Thomas Galdman who married Mary Nicholson: Firstly, there is the connection to West Firle, and scondly Thomas and Mary had a son Thomas born 1782 who married Jane Fiest in 1807 (surname spelt various ways in the records - Fiest, Feist, Fist). The parents of Jane Fiest were Thomas Fiest and Jane Huggett (ie same surname as Thomas' wife Elizabeth Huggett). Sue Williams also writes: "On the marriage of Thomas Gladman bachelor to Elizabeth Huggett spinster 7th day April 1821 one of the witnesses was Ann Gladman (I can't read the other - possibly a churchwarden) It is possible that Ann Gladman was the wife of my Gabriel Gladman as I can't see any other Ann Gladman living in the village at the time. This would also seem to point in the direction of Thomas Gladman, son of William, being his father".
Thomas Gladman Shelley was also known as Thomas Gladman.
Thomas Gladman Shelley married Elizabeth Huggett, daughter of Edward Huggett and Elizabeth Thomas, on 7 April 1821 at West Firle, Sussex, England, Thomas is a bachelor, "1st regiment of dragoons."1
Thomas was at the Battle of Waterloo. The following information from Thomas Gladman's military record came from Susan Williams:
TNA ref: WO119/57/117. Born West Firle, Served in Romney Fencibles 1794-1800, 1st Dragoons 10 Sept 1800-26 June 1819; age 24 when enlisted in Dragoons. Discharged because of chronic rheumatism and worn out, age 43. Pension from Kilmainham Hospital. When discharged, 5ft 7and a half inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, brown complexion, labourer by trade. Well written signature.
Thomas Gladman Shelley died in 1839 at West Firle, Sussex, England.2
