In 1771 Abraham Alce and Sarah (?) lived at Milton St, Wilmington, Sussex, England, The baptism for their son John ALCE on 6.10.1771 states that Abraham and Sarah are of Milton St, Wilmington.
The East Blatchington parish register has a marriage of a William Coombs the younger, widower, to Ann Alce, spinster, both of this parish, banns, 1.1.1791, witness Edward Brazier. This Ann Alce could be another child of Abraham and Sarah.

Abraham and Sarah were buried on the same day and the register states "Abraham Alce and Sarah his wife buried in the same grave". One wonders about the cause of their deaths (accident, cold weather, coincidence?).

b. 21 March 1779, d. 27 February 1864
FatherAbraham Alce b. 25 Feb 1738, d. 1803

Elizabeth Alce was born in 1779 at East Blatchington, Sussex, England.
Elizabeth Alce was baptized on 21 March 1779 at St Peter, East Blatchington, Sussex, England.1 She was the daughter of Abraham Alce and Sarah (?)
Elizabeth Alce and Peter Terry obtained a marriage license on 17 April 1798 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England. Elizabeth age 18 years with consent of father Abr.A. East Blatchington. Peter age 20 years of Newhaven, jnr.2
Elizabeth Alce married Peter Terry, son of John Terry and Sarah Hollands, on 18 April 1798 at East Blatchington, Sussex, England. Peter is "of Meeching alias Newhaven."2
Peter and Elizabeth were married by licence which is unusual as marriage was normally by banns (marriage by licence could be performed immediately, the couple did not have to wait for the banns to be read over three consecutive weeks). The record for the marriage licence is contained in volume 26 of the Sussex Record Society publications (Marriage Licences, Archdeaconery of Lewes):
"Terry, Peter the younger of Meeching, otherwise Newhaven, labourer, bachelor, aged 20 and upds, with consent of Peter Terry his father, and Elizabeth Alce of East Bletchington, spinster aged 18 and upds, with consent of Abraham Alce her father: bondsmen, said P.T. and Thomas Simmons of Seaford, yeoman 17 April 1798 [Lewes]"
The information on this marriage licence indicates Peter Terry as the father which disagrees with the information deduced so far (i.e. that John Terry is the father). Certainly, the Peter Terry baptised to John and Sarah Terry on 21.12.1777 at Newhaven is of the correct age, but there may be another Peter Terry (son of Peter Terry) who was the person that married Elizabeth Alce. However, the East Sussex Baptisms Index was searched for the period 1700 to 1790 and no baptism of Peter Terry to father Peter Terry was found. The original marriage licences have been destroyed so it cannot be checked.
Their first son Richard stated his place of birth as Blatchington on the 1851 census but his baptism occurred in Newhaven. Peter and Elizabeth were married in East Blatchington so this possibly indicates that they moved from Blatchington to Newhaven shortly after his birth, or that Elizabeth had returned to her parents for the birth of their first child (a common practice).
Peter Terry died in 1825 aged 48 years leaving Elizabeth with a young family of eight children. She remained a widow until she died in 1864, nearly 40 years later. Each parish was responsible for its own poor and the 1851 census indicates that she was a parish relief widow (i.e. receiving financial support).
On 7 June 1841 Elizabeth Alce lived at High St, Newhaven, Sussex, England, living with her sons Thomas and Peter Terry, and a William Clark age 35 years, and a James Miles aged 6 years.3
Elizabeth Alce was a parish relief widow on 30 March 1851.
On 30 March 1851 Elizabeth Alce lived at Newhaven Union House, Newhaven, Sussex, England, living with her son Thomas and his wife Louisa & family.4
On 7 April 1861 Elizabeth Alce lived at 4 Bollen's Row, Newhaven, Sussex, England, a widower, aged 83 years, formerly a charwoman. She was living with son Thomas and his wife Louisa and family.5
Elizabeth Alce died on 27 February 1864 at Newhaven, Sussex, England, at age 84. She died of bronchitis (1 week). The witness was Sarah Mockford, present at the death.6
Elizabeth Alce was buried on 4 March 1864 at Newhaven, Sussex, England.
