Willetta Ann Scott was also known as Billie.
As of circa 1925, Willetta Ann Scott was also known as Willetta Ann Barber.
A press photo from 1932 mentions Miss Billie Barber, daughter of Edward J Barber, President of the Barber Steamship Lines, arriving New York on the ship Berengaria on 22 November 1932. The passenger list confirms Willetta Ann Barber was on board.1
She was a step daughter of Edward John Barber from his second marriage to Ethel Scott (nee Amweg) in the 1920s, and she must have changed her surname from Scott to Barber after her mother's marriage.
Willetta became a writer of crime novels under the name Willetta Ann Barber. She wrote the books jointly with artist R.F. Schabelitz and they seem to have been quite successful. They had a unique and novel approach as the books had many illustrations of the crime scenes which contained clues to help the reader if he or she could spot them. Her titles include:
Murder Draws a Line (1940); Pencil Points to Murder (1941); Drawn Conclusion (1943); The Noose is Drawn (1945); Drawback to Murder (1947); The Deed is Drawn (1949).
Her husband, the actor Matthew Smith, also published a book in 1949 called Overnight.
