  • Anecdote*: A document at the East Sussex Record Office titled "Deeds of Heaths Farm Plumpton" (ESRO: AMS5797) states that Alexander is living in Tonbridge and his occupation is a tiler:
Wood assigned the lease on 24 June 1698 to Abraham Maynard of Fletching yeoman; a house and barn had lately been built on the land. • Residence*: On 1 April 1735 Alexander Ashdown lived at Tonbridge, Kent, EnglandB.
  • Anecdote: Although there is a burial for an Alexander Ashdown on 24 Aug 1742 at Speldhurst, this was initially considered to be the son, not the father. The burial of Alexander's wife. Ann on 25 Nov 1742 indicates that she is the wife of Alexander, suggesting he is still alive, otherwise she would have been identified as a widow. However, thhere is a burial of an Alexander Ashdown at Speldhurst on 23 March 1815 where the age is given as 81 years (i.e. born c1734 which is a perfect fit for the son). Further information is needed, and the original burial register needs to be checked for Ann's burial in Nov 1742.
  • Anecdote: There is a marriage of an Alexander Ashdown of Tonbridge and Margaret Corke of Brenchley on 9 May 1745 at Pembury, Kent.
There is also the possiblity that Alexander married Elizabeth Hams on 19 Apr 1750 at East Grinstead, given the family had a historical connection to that town.2,1

  • Birth*: Alexander Ashdown was born circa 1725 at England.
  • Anecdote*: This Alexander Ashdowne appears at East Grinstead and there is no obvious birth or baptism to be found for him. It is possible that he is linked to earlier occurrences of Ashdown's at East Grinstead, in particular to the family of Robert Ashdown who was buried at East Grinstead in 1714 and left a will. There is an Alexander in that family but he moved to Tonbridge and then to Speldhurst and a connection has yet to be made.
  • Marriage*: Alexander Ashdown married Elizabeth Hams on 19 April 1750 at Maresfield, Sussex, EnglandB, both of East Grinstead.1
  • Death*: Alexander Ashdown died in 1773 at East Grinstead, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: Alexander Ashdown was buried on 28 March 1773 at St Swithun, East Grinstead, Sussex, EnglandB.2
