    This is the last will and testament of me William Rothwell of Alfriston in the county of Sussex Gardener made this fifth day of July in the year of our Lord 1784 and in the 24th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth First I give and bequeath to Kezia the wife of John Baker of Hellingly in the said county the sum of £10 of good and lawful money of Great Britain Also to Mary Baker daughter of the said John Baker all my bed and bedding household goods plate linen and furniture of every sort and kind whatsoever Also I give and bequeath to Mary the wife of John Hermatage the sum of £5 of like money Also to my niece Mary Ford the wife of Thomas Ford of Ringmer in the said county husbandman the sum of £5 of like money Also to Kezia Weller the sum of £5 of like money Also to John Weller of Ringmer in the said county farmer the sum of £10 of like money All which said legacies I will and direct may be paid to the respective legatee or legatees within six months next after my decease Also I will and direct that my executor hereinafter named be at the charge of my funeral and setting up and erecting a head and foot stone to the memory of me and my wife Ann Rothwell in the churchyard of Alfriston aforesaid and as to all the rents residue and remainder of my estate whereof I shall die possessed or which shall be anyway due owing or belonging unto me at the time of my decease (after the payment of the aforesaid legacies hereby bequeathed my just debts funeral expenses and the charge of proving this my will) I give and bequeath to my nephew Richard Rothwell of Petworth in the said county his heirs and assigns forever Lastly I constitute and appoint the said Richard Rothwell Executor of this my last will and testament here by making all former will or wills and codicils by me at anytime made to be void In Witness whereof I the said William Rothwell the testator have to this my last will and testament contained in this sheet of paper set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.

    In the Name of God Amen the twelfth day of August in the fifth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord and Lady William and Mary by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King and Queen Defenders of the Faith Anno Dm 1693 I John Rothwell of Uckfeild in the County of Sussex Carryer being in good health and of sound and pfect understanding thanks be given to Almighty God for the same yet calling to mind the certainty of my death and uncertainty of the tyme when doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testamt in manner and forme following First I bequeath my soule into the hands of Allmighty God my Creator having an assured hope to be saved through the passion of Jesus Christ my blessed Saviour and redeemer And I committ my body to the Earth from whence it came to be decently buried according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter named, And touching the disposicon of such worldly Goods & Estate as God in his mercy hath lent me I dispose thereof as followeth Imprimus I give and bequeath to Mary my Loveing Wife the sume of five pounds of lawfull English money to be paid her by my Executors hereafter named within one yeare next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto the said Mary my wife the Bedd bedstedle Curtains vallence Rugg and all other things thereunto belonging as the same is now standing and being in the upper chanber of my now dwelling house situate in Uckfeild aforesaid and alsoe three paire of sheets six pewter dishes one pewter chamber pott six pewter spoons two brass Skilletts and the brass kettle which was last bought one joyn’d chest one little table three chayres six wooden dishes and two Barrells all which goods and houshold stuffe my mind and will is shalbe delivered to my said wife within one month next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my sonn John Rothwell the sume of ten pounds to be paid unto him by my Executors hereafter named within one yeare after my decease, And also one feather bed one boulster one paire of sheets one coverlid and one silver spoone which said goods and chattells I have lent unto my said sonn John Rothwell //

    In the Name of God Amen I John Rothwell of Lindfield in the county of Sussex joiner being weak in body but of a sound disposing mind and memory thanks be to God for the same (this fifteenth day of May Anno Dm one thousand seven hundred and twenty one in the seventh year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George by the Grace of God King of Great Britain) do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First and principally I commend my soul to God hoping for salvation through the only merits and mediation of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and my body I commit to the earth there to be decently interred at the discretion of my executor hereafter named And As for the temporal estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me I give and dispose thereof as followeth Item I give and bequeath unto my five sons that is to say John Rothwell Stephen Rothwell Thomas Rothwell Robert Rothwell and Benjamin Rothwell twenty shillings apiece to be paid to them by my Executor hereafter named when they and each of them shall attain to their several and respective age of one and twenty years Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Rothwell the sum of twenty shillings to be paid to her by my executor hereafter named when she shall attain to the age of one and twenty years Item I give and bequeath unto my brother-in-law Robert Jenner of Lindfield aforesaid husbandman all that my dwelling house garden backside and premises in Lindfield aforesaid wherein I now dwell together with the yearly rents issues and profits thereunto belonging and arising to have and to hold all and every the said dwelling house garden backside and premises with their appurtenances unto the said Robert Jenner his heirs or assigns forever Upon This Trust and condition only that he the said Robert Jenner his heirs and assigns may be thereby and by virtue thereof empowered to take up the yearly rents and profits there of (or to mortgage or sell the same) for to clothe educate and bring up my children until they able to get a livelihood for themselves In case the said yearly rents and profits there of shall not be sufficient to bring up my children as aforesaid and to and for no other use or uses trusts or conditions whatsoever And it is my will and desire that after my children are educated clothed and brought up as aforesaid, That then my said brother-in-law Robert Jenner his heirs executors and administrators shall and do account with and pay unto my said son John Rothwell or his heirs all such money as shall be then remaining in his or their hands arising by the sale of the said house and premises or taken up upon mortgage and not expended on my said children as aforesaid first deducting all such reasonable charges which he or they shall expend in and about the executing the trust aforesaid All my goods chattels and personal estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my said brother-in-law Robert Jenner to the intent that he may thereby and therewith be enabled to pay my debts legacies and funeral expenses and the over plus thereof (if any be) to go towards the bringing up my said children and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said brother-in-law Robert Jenner whole and sole executor and trustee of this my last will and testament desiring my good friend Mr Timothy Browne to be assisting my said trustee and to see that this my said will be executed and performed according to the intent and meaning thereof so hereby revoking all former wills whatsoever by me heretofore made and in testimony that this is my last will and testament I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.

    In the Name of God Amen I John Rothwell of Lewes the county of Sussex Currier being very weak in body but of sound mind and memory thanks be to God do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following First and principally I resign my soul to Almighty God my creator hoping for salvation and eternal life through the merits of Jesus Christ my saviour and my body I will to decent Christian burial as my Executors shall think fit and as to my temporal estate I dispose thereof as followeth First I will to my kinswoman Elizabeth Rothwell of Lewes £5 of lawful money and to Mary Day of Ditchling a gold ring of 20 shillings Item I give devise and bequeath unto my brother Thomas Rothwell and to my brother in law Thomas Weller all my copyhold messuage lands and tenements in Uckfield and all other my real and personal estate whatsoever to hold to them the said Thomas Rothwell and Thomas Weller their heirs and assigns forever In Trust that they the said Thomas Rothwell and Thomas Weller the survivor of them and his heirs shall sell the same for the best advantage they can and with the money thereby arising shall pay my debts legacies funeral and executory charges and perform the will of Stephen Rothwell deceased to whom I am executor and divide and pay the remainder of the said money to my mother Elizabeth and to my brothers and sister Thomas Stephen William Richard Edward Benjamin and Anne equally share and share alike Item I name and appoint the said Thomas Rothwell and Thomas Weller joint executors of this my will hereby revoking all others In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the tenth day of February in the year of our Lord 1720.
