Ursula Longley

d. after 1560
FatherGeorge Longley
Ursula Longley was the daughter of George Longley.
Ursula's maiden name of Longley is taken from the reference in her husband Alexander's will of 1558 where he names his father-in-law as "George Longlye".
Ursula Longley married Alexander Farmer, son of Robert Farmer, circa 1550 at Sussex, England.
Alexander's will of 1558 makes no reference to any of his own children, so it is assumed that he and Ursula had no surviving children.
Ursula Longley witnessed the will of Alexander Farmer dated 23 January 1558 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England; Note: 23 Jan 1558/59.1
Ursula Longley married Bartholomew Pusane on 12 February 1559 at Frant, Sussex, England, Note: 12 Feb 1559/60. The marriage does not say that Ursula is a widow.2
Ursula Longley died after 1560 at Sussex, England.
Bartholomew Pusanna was buried at Rotherfield on 27 Nov 1583.3
There is a marriage of Ursula Pusanna and Henry Kent on 23 Nov 1585 at Rotherfield. Could this be a third marriage for Ursula or perhaps a daughter?2
The following extract comes from a book written by R. F. Hunnisett entitled Sussex Coroners' Inquests 1558--1603 and may be connected to the family of Alexander Farmer and Ursula Longley:
21st. August 1588. Rotherfield, Sussex. Magnus Fowle, county coronor. Jurors: John Midelton, John Coper, alias Palar, John Staplee, John Hider, George Longely, John Gowldsmyth, Robert Ryvers, Stephen Hosmer, Daniel Philtnersse, Christopher Hilles, Henry Kent, JamesTayler, Richard a Jeames.
On 7th. July [1588] Ursula Farmer late of Rotherfield, Sussex, 'spinster', gave birth to a live female child at Rotherfield, Sussex and immediately afterwards she and her mother, Alice Farmer of Rotherfield, Sussex, ' spinster' murdered the child, Ursula throwing her with both hands into a well containing water whence she immediately died and Alice being feloniously present aiding and abetting her. They were delivered up to the assizes and both pleaded not guilty and were aquitted: they had no chattels and had not fled. They were therefore released.
Was Alice, the mother mentioned above, a daughter of Alexander and Ursula?
It does illustrate the lengths that people would go to avoid the stigma and consequences of having illegitimate children.4
