Mary Elliott

b. 21 December 1777, d. 1870

Parents:

Father: John Elliott b. c 1746, d. 1793
Mother: Mary Farrant b. 29 Apr 1751, d. 1793
Last Edited: 31 Dec 2023
  • Birth: Mary Elliott was born in 1777 at Waldron, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Baptism*: Mary Elliott was baptized on 21 December 1777 at Waldron, Sussex, EnglandB, The 1851 census gives her place of birth as Waldron c1781.1,2
  • She was the daughter of John Elliott and Mary Farrant.
  • Marriage*: Mary Elliott married Gideon Gladman, son of William Gladman and Susannah (?), on 23 April 1799 at Framfield, Sussex, EnglandB.3
  • Married Name: As of 23 April 1799, her married name was Gladman.
  • (Witness) Will: Mary Elliott is mentioned in the will of Gideon Gladman dated 20 January 1830 at Framfield, Sussex, EnglandB.4
  • Anecdote*: There are many records on the ESRO and National Archives website relating to land holdings of Gideon Gladman, including a map of one plot of land. Anyone doing further research on this person should search www.nationalarchives.gov.uk or the ESRO catalogue.
  • Residence: On 7 June 1841 Mary Elliott and William Gladman lived at Mrs Martins Cottage, White Lion, Framfield, Sussex, England.5
  • Anecdote: In the 1841 census for Framfield, Mary Gladman (60 years) is living with her grandson William (9 years). She is recorded as a farmer, living at "Mrs Martins Cottage/White Lion". The next cottage is called "Mary Gladman's cottage" and is occupied by Mary's daughter Mary Taylor and her husband George Taylor (occupation: butcher) and family.
In the 1841 census for Laughton, Mary's son Gideon (occupation: farmer) and wife Harriet are living at "Terrable Downs" (Terrible Down also known as Tarble Down). The parish boundary between Laughton and Framfield runs down the road alongside Mary Gladman's main holdings/farm house (see 1841 tithe map for Framfield later) dividing her farm lands between Laughton and Framfield. So Gideon and Harriet were probably living across the road in Laughton while Mary and other family members were living in the buildings shown on the tithe map in Framfield!6,7
  • Anecdote: The 1841 tithe map for Framfield identifies Mary Gladman's properties, at least on the Framfield side of the road, as plots 42 to 49 (Mary is both owner and occupier). There are a number of plots labelled "White Lion" which are owned by Henry Martin (plots 36 to 38,40,41) and they appear to comprise a large farm with fields of 8 acres, 48 acres and 4 acres identified as "White Lion". The deterioration of the tithe map allows only some of these fields to be identified but they were generally all adjacent but to the south of Mary Gladman's holdings. The 1878 OS Map shows a public house in the middle of Mary Gladman's holdings called the White Lion but it is not known when this commenced.8
  • Anecdote: The property is shown here on Google maps.
  • Residence*: On 30 March 1851 Mary Elliott lived at Coopers, Laughton, Sussex, England, a widow, living with her widower son Gideon and his children.2
  • Residence: On 7 April 1861 Mary Elliott lived at Horsted Keynes, Sussex, EnglandB.9
  • Residence: On 7 April 1861 Mary Elliott lived at Scrippens Pit Lane, Horsted Keynes, Sussex, England.9
  • Anecdote*: In the 1861 census, Mary is 82 years old and living at Horsted Keynes with her daughter Mary Taylor (nee Gladman) and her husband George Taylor and two of their children: George age 13 years born West Hoathly and Henry, 6 years, born Horsted Keynes.9
  • Death*: Mary Elliott died in 1870 at Horsted Keynes, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: Mary Elliott was buried on 21 November 1870 at St Giles, Horsted Keynes, Sussex, EnglandB, "age 91 years", surname GLEDMAN.10
