This page has been established to facilitate sharing of information with people researching the surname LATTER in East Sussex.
My connection to the LATTER family is a long way back in my family tree, at the marriage of Thomas BARBER alias NYNNE and the widow Anne HEATH (nee LATTER) in 1639. They had three children and I descend from their eldest, Thomas BARBER baptised 3 May 1640 at Rotherfield. The Latter family appears to have deep roots at Rotherfield and a manorial court record from 1464 and 1467 for Walsh's manor in Rotherfield mentions a Richard LATTER.
The LATTER family is difficult to research because they appear to have moved between parishes in Sussex (Rotherfield, Frant, Wadhurst) and Kent (Lamberhurst, Tonbridge, etc) and often owned property in both counties. For example, the LATTER clan living in Frant, Sussex maintained a strong connection to Lamberhurst in Kent. My own ancestor, Edmund LATTER of Rotherfield died in Tonbridge, Kent fortunately leaving a will which enabled his connection back to Rotherfield to be proved.
A recent project to transcribe the LATTER family wills in East Sussex was completed and a PDF copy of the book "The LATTER Wills of East Sussex 1639-1858" is available for free download on the Publications page (see main menu on the left) and contains the family trees identified so far. Those trees are also presented here and the people who left wills/admons are highlighted in yellow:
- Tree 1. Edmund Latter (c1550- ) of Rotherfield and Tonbridge
- Tree 2. John Latter (c1575-1662) of Rotherfield
