This page has been established to facilitate sharing of information with people researching the surname LATTER in East Sussex.
My connection to the LATTER family is a long way back in my family tree, at the marriage of Thomas BARBER alias NYNNE and the widow Anne HEATH (nee LATTER) in 1639. They had three children and I descend from their eldest, Thomas BARBER baptised 3 May 1640 at Rotherfield. The Latter family appears to have deep roots at Rotherfield and a manorial court record from 1464 and 1467 for Walsh's manor in Rotherfield mentions a Richard LATTER.
The LATTER family is difficult to research because they appear to have moved between parishes in Sussex (Rotherfield, Frant, Wadhurst) and Kent (Lamberhurst, Tonbridge, etc) and often owned property in both counties. For example, the LATTER clan living in Frant, Sussex maintained a strong connection to Lamberhurst in Kent. My own ancestor, Edmund LATTER of Rotherfield died in Tonbridge, Kent fortunately leaving a will which enabled his connection back to Rotherfield to be proved.
A recent project has started to transcribe as many as possible to the LATTER family wills in Sussex and these are gradually being deposited in the Sussex Family History Group's Will Depository where they are freely available to members. This website is using these wills and the church records to put together family trees where possible. The trees identifies so far are:
- Tree 1. Edmund Latter (c1550- ) of Rotherfield and Tonbridge
- Tree 2. John Latter (c1575-1662) of Rotherfield
- Tree 3. The Latter Family of Frant and Lamberhurst (c1630- )
- Tree 4. Simon Latter (c1630- ) of Rotherfield
- Tree 5. Latter Family of Ringmer and Eastbourne (c1650- 1800)

These Latter familes have been pieced together through various wills in conjunction with the Sussex baptisms, marriage and burials indexes. As further information becomes available they may be able to be placed in some of the larger trees.
