  Death of Mr John Wickens
  A FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER
  The death occurred on Monday of Mr John Wickens, photographer, Bangor. He was 71 years of age.
  Throughout the country Mr Wickens was famed as a photographer, especially for his artistic views of Snowdonia and the Menai Straits , which adorn the walls of many residences in England and Wales.
  A native of Sussex, Mr Wickens served his apprenticeship as a photographer in Brighton and came to Bangor over fifty years ago. He made a feature of photographic studies, over which he spent a considerable time and which revealed a high level of artistry. He had three striking photographs of Nant Francon – in summer, winter and in rain. His picture of the Menai Straits taken from the roof the tubular bridge and showing a magnificent sweep of landscape and seascape always arrests the attention of the lover of the beautiful. A picture of which Mr Wickens was justly proud was that of the deer on snow covered Vaynol Park. The photographing of these timid animals was a tedious procedure and Mr Wickens spent many days hidden in a haystack with the lens of his camera peeping out. The deer would not come near the haystack, and Mr Wickens patience was well nigh exhausted when they “lined up” in perfect formation for a picture that is unique in many respects.
  “ROYAL GROUP”
  Another of his pictures and for which he gained the premier award in a national competition at Crystal Palace, was entitled “The Three Graces”. This was a charming group photograph of the daughters of a Wesleyan minister formerly resident in Bangor. Among his best groups was that taken at the entrance to Penrhyn castle on the occasion of the visit of the late King Edward, then Prince of Wales. In this group are King Edward and Queen Alexandra, the Queen of Norway, the second Baron Penrhyn and some of the other leading nobility of North Wales. For this picture Mr Wickens experimented with a new type of plate.
  Especially for one who loved nature and all that was beautiful, a great affliction befell Mr Wickens fifteen years ago when he was bereft of his sight. The business was carried on and is still in charge of his son-in-law Mr G. D. Evans. It was a sad blow for Mr Wickens to be blind but he took his affliction philosophically and made the best of it.
  LEARNT BRAILLE
  One of the first things he did was to learn Braille, being taught by Miss Leighton Greenwood, and he found an inmate in St David’s Hospital whose affliction was even greater than his own, for he was blind deaf and dumb. Mr Wickens regularly visited him at St David’s. He enabled this trebly-afflicted patient to communicate with friends in various parts of the globe, and gave him a new interest in life. He also interested himself in other patients at St David’s, and when in the hospital he was the life and soul of the institution where his enthusiasm was contagious. Ill health however ended these visits.
  Mr Wickens also spoke at meetings of the North Wales Society for the Blind from the point of view of a blind person, and he stressed that what the blind wanted was not pity but companionship.
  The senior deacon, Mr Wickens was a zealous worker of the English Baptist Church of Bangor. He was a convincing speaker; at times really eloquent and he supported Mr Lloyd George throughout his political career. He worked assiduously also for the local YMCA and was a member of several orchestral societies in the Bangor district playing the viola. He leaves a widow and a daughter, Mrs D. D. Evans.
  THE FUNERAL
  The funeral took place yesterday at Glanadda Cemetery. A short service was held at the English Baptist Church, in which part was taken by the pastor (the Rev Roland Howorth), the Rev Ceini Jones, Penuel, an old friend and the Re. Paul Bacon. “Oh rest in the Lord” from Mendelssohn’s Elijah was played by Mr F Stephenson, of Friars School. The chief mourners were: Mrs Evans (daughter); Mr G. D. Evans (son-in-law); Mr J Hugh Evans (grandson); Messrs Howard Lewis, T Charles Lewis and Mr Aspden.

She recently qualified for the welfare section of the Civil Defense Corps, a shere in which she was active during the war. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. Harris who lived at Brighton. In addition to the widower, she leaves a son, Police-Constable Lawrence Finley of Pyecombe. The funeral service has been arranged to take place today (Friday) at Selmeston Church at 11:00am., followed by cremation at the Downs Crematorium, Brighton.⁴
