- Anecdote: According to Bernice Ashdown Weber, William had an earlier marriage which resulted in two sons, John & Henry. No evidence has been found, although there is a marriage of a William Ashdown and Elizabeth Delves on 16 Oct 1830 at Waldron (both of Waldron).

About 1840 the William Ashdowns went to Australia, leaving the two oldest boys behind
with their Mother's parents.
They joined a caravan traveling inland from Sydney in New South Wales. One day when
the men were out exploring and the women and children were resting in camp, Lewis, the
fifteen month old Ashdown baby disappeared. Days were spent in searching for him, but
no trace of the missing child was ever found. The grief and anxiety over the uncertain fate
of the baby was more than the mother was able to bear and in less than six months she
died, Our last communication from this branch of the family was a letter written about
1888 from daughter Isobel (Anderson) who was at that time living in Tumut, New South
Wales, Australia.
