John Howell
b. circa 1540
John Howell was born circa 1540 at Sussex, England.
John Howell married Annis (?) circa 1566 at Willingdon, Sussex, England.1
John Howell left a will made on 12 November 1577 at Jevington, Sussex, England.1
"In the name of God Amen the 12th November 1577, I John HOWELL of Jevington ... give to Grace HOWELL, Annis HOWELL and Olive[?] HOWELL my daughters [all under the age of 21]... also my daughter Pacyence HOWELL ... to John HOWELL my sonne a seame of wheate, two seams of barley to be delivered to him at the age of eighteen years.. I make Annis my wife my sole executor."
Transcribed by Ted Howell March 2002.
The son John HOWELL mentioned in the above will is very likely the John HOWELL of Jevington who left a will dated 1626 (also in the SFHG Wills Depository).
Notes added by Geoffrey Barber, December 2012
Note that there is a marriage of a John Howell and an Agnes Nycklas on 16 Feb 1566 at Willingdon. As the name Agnes is often written Annis, this looks a real possibility. However, while this marriage fits, it needs to be treated with caution due to the many gaps in the Jevington church records in the 1500s. (Sussex Marriage Index coverage is given as 1536, 1576, 1606-42, …..) Also, there is another John Howell in Willingdon who starts having children in 1566, the year of the above marriage, which creates significant doubt that the above marriage is the correct one for our John Howell of Jevington:
Edward Howell baptised on 7 Dec 1566 at Willingdon son of John Howell (no mother mentioned). An Edward is not mentioned in John's will of 1577.
Another son (name unknown) is baptised 2 Apr 1569 at Willingdon, son of John Howell (no mother given). He is buried at Willingdon on 7 Apr 1569.
Jane Howell was baptised 5 Oct 1571 daughter of John Howell, at Willingdon.
Ann Howell was baptised 6 Oct 1572 daughter of John Howell, at Willingdon.
There are no more Howell baptisms in Willingdon from this until 1594 when a John Howell is baptised son of Edward Howell. This is likely to be Edward (above) who was baptised in 1566, and given he survived and there is no mention of an Edward (or a Jane for that matter) in the will, it would indicate that these Willingdon baptisms do not belong to the family mentioned in the will of John Howell of Jevington in 1577.
Although this does not completely disprove the marriage for our John Howell (as the mother's name was never mentioned on any of the above baptisms) I feel it is unlikely to be the correct one as the Willingdon baptisms start just after the marriage (which was in Willingdon). This information is left here to assist in future research.

Elizabeth Hord
d. 1768
The surname HORD is most likely wrong and the result of a difficult transcription. There are no HORDs in the baptism register for Willingdon, but there are HART, HEAD, HOPE, HOOL. Also, there is a gap in the Willingdon registers between 1689 and 1694 which is unfortunate as it is likely the period when Elizabeth was baptised.1
