Charity Sharpe was born in 1679 at Lewes, Sussex, England.
Charity Sharpe was baptized on 22 November 1679 at All Saints, Lewes, Sussex, England, "Charitie SHARPE, daughter of John Sharpe and Elizabeth, abode: St Johns. Bapt. by Mr Montague of ye Cliffe."1 She was the daughter of John Sharpe and Elizabeth Norton.
The will of George Norton made 4 May 1682 and proved Sep 1682 mentions Charity as his granddaughter, the daughter of John Sharpe of Lewes and Elizabeth Norton. (Will reference: ESRO A36 41-2.)
Charity was later to name her first daughter Katherine, presumably after her mother's sister Katherine who was executor of the will in which Charity was a beneficiary. Charity's mother died in 1688 when Charity would have been about 8 years old, so her aunt Katherine was probably quite close to the family.
There is a second baptism for a Charity Sharpe on 6 Dec 1679 at Lewes St John sub Castro to John and MARY Sharpe. This is probably a mistake and should be John and ELIZABTH Sharpe because:
1. John's brother Mark had his daughter Charity baptised in both Lewes St John sub Castro and Lewes All Saints in 1686, so a double baptism for Charity in 1679 is possible.
2. There is no evidence of any other children to a John and Mary Sharpe, except in 1687 in Isfield and this could be accounted for by a John Sharpe/Mary Jeffery marriage in 1683 at Ringmer.
Charity Sharpe married John Ballard, son of John Ballard and Joan Dutton, on 29 September 1698 at Rodmell, Sussex, England.2
As of 29 September 1698, her married name was Ballard.
