- Baptism*: Reuben Packham was baptized on 16 November 1834 at All Saints, Lindfield, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of Henry Packham and Martha Burry.
- Anecdote*: Packham's forge and wheelwright's shop, Splayne's Green, Fletching
Date: 1861-2005
ESRO reference: AMS 6704
Description: Reuben Packham (then aged 16) was working as an assistant to his father, Henry Packham, a wheelwright in Lindfield, at the time of the 1851 census. A business card (AMS 6704/6/1) announces that Reuben had taken over the business of T Parsons as a coach and cart wheelwright, Crawley. The exact date of this is unclear. Reuben was working as a journeyman wheelwright at Horsted Green in Horsted Keynes in 1861 (census). He was married to Mary Ann, and they then had three children, John (aged 7), Henry (aged 3) and Martha (aged 1). The 1862 Kelly's directory lists H Packham, presumably his father Henry, as a wheelwright in Crawley, but there is no reference to Reuben or the business run by Parsons. Family tradition has it that Reuben quarrelled with his father and moved to Splayne's Green around 1863. He took over the Plough Inn, and also worked as a wheelwright.
Reuben took over the blacksmith's forge of Reuben John Bannister at Splayne's Green, presumably after his death (Reuben Bannister was buried in Fletching on 29 August 1880, aged 57). The forge was long-established. John Gilham (also spelt Gillham) and his wife Jane had been granted a piece of waste in 1665 and erected a blacksmith's shop (Danehill Parish Historical Society Magazine, vol 6 number 8, 2001). The property, which was copyhold of the manor of Tarring Camois, then passed to William Gilham, followed by Alexander Illman. In 1728 Alexander Illman surrendered it to Elizabeth Gilham, the widow of William Gilham. In 1767 William Bannister was admitted to the premises, which remained in the hands of the Bannister family until 1881. William Bannister was granted a licence to take down the smith's shop or forge in 1828, presumably so that it could be rebuilt (SRL 2/11/10) The premises were put up for auction by the executors of Reuben John Bannister in August 1881, and were then described as a dwelling-house, smithy, shoeing and wheelwright's shop, stables, timber yard and land. They were bought by Sir Spencer Maryon Maryon Wilson of the Searles estate, Fletching, in 1883 (SRL 2/11/24; 11/26); he carried out extensive alterations, including extending the living accommodation at the forge. Reuben Packham, who was described as master wheelwright in the 1881 census, was probably already the tenant.
At the 1881 census, the household of Reuben Packham (aged 45), born in Lindfield, consisted of: Mary Ann (wife) aged 45, born in Horsted Keynes; son Henry (23), born in Lindfield; son Frederick (10), born Fletching; son Alfred Reuben (18), born Crawley; son Abraham Charles (13), born Fletching; son Edward (8), born Fletching; son George (5), born Fletching; daughter Margrate (Margaret), aged 9, born Fletching; daughter Martha (3), born Fletching. Reuben seems to have continued his involvement with the drink industry, since directories up to 1887 list him as a wheelwright or coachbuilder, and beer retailer.
Reuben died aged 53, and was buried on 25 June 1888. His widow Mary Ann carried on the business, and took over Flitteridge Farm nearby around 1894; she also owned three cottages. She is described as a smith, beer retailer and farmer in the Kelly's directories of 1895 and 1899. Alfred Reuben and Edward left the business to run Park Farm, Fletching, between around 1903 to 1905, but returned to work at the forge as partners, trading under the name AR and E Packham, coachbuilders, wheelwrights and general smiths. Mary Ann died in 1916 and was buried on 7 November at Fletching, aged 81; her address was given as Flitteridge Farm.
Edward married Ada Minnie Bedwell (22 December 1878 - 13 November 1965), the grand-daughter of Peter and Sarah Bedwell, and daughter of Eliza Bedwell, on 13 October 1906 at Fletching. Their children were Frank ( 19 October 1907 - 5 March 1998); Muriel (2 March 1910 - 13 November 1999); May (born 21 May 1913); Nancy (6 December 1916 - 8 March 2004); Peggy (born 14 November 1919). Alfred Reuben and his wife Barbara retired to Cuckfield in 1928, and Edward then ran the business alone. He died 3 March 1942, and his stock was sold in 1945; the rest of the family then moved to Cuckfield..Custodial History: The donor is the daughter of Edward Packham, who owned the forgeRelated Material: For records of the Maryon Wilson family ...
