Thomas Penfold
b. circa 1725, d. 1791
Last Edited: 31 Mar 2024
- Birth*: Thomas Penfold was born circa 1725 at Sussex, England.
- Marriage*: Thomas Penfold married Ann White, daughter of Henry White and Anne Turner, on 10 April 1748 at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- Anecdote: Thomas's wife, Ann White, died and was buried on 3 Jun 1761. This is the last PENFOLD burial at Hurstpierpoint until 1815. There are four more baptisms to Thomas and Ann at Hurstpierpoint after this (Barbara, James, William and John) and then no more. The lack of burials suggests the family moved away from Hurstpierpoint at some point after 1767. The children's baptisms for Thomas & Ann appear to pick up again at Cuckfield (esp. Susanna in 1769). A legal document written in 1770 confirms that they are "of Cuckfield" at that time [ESRO: SAS/N 124]. However, later baptisms to a Thomas & Anne (Lydia 1775, Henry 1775 and Ann 1779) are not convincing, and there may be another Thomas & Ann PENFOLD family for whom there is no marriage in the SFHG marriage index.
- Marriage*: Thomas Penfold married Ann Dudney, daughter of William Dudney and Ann Gibbs, on 28 September 1761 at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- Anecdote: Thomas's wife, Ann Dudney, received a bequest of £100 under the will of her late uncle, Thomas Gibbs. The will was proved on 1 June 1765 at Chichester.2
- Anecdote*: The family moved from Hurstpierpoint to Cuckfield c1768.
