  • Baptism*: Henry Stoner was baptized on 22 April 1753 at St Peter's, Cowfold, Sussex, EnglandB.1
  • He was the son of Thomas Stoner and Anne White.
  • Marriage*: Henry Stoner married Phoebe Roberts, daughter of John Roberts and Mary Bignal, on 25 August 1774 at Cowfold, Sussex, EnglandB, Witnesses: Isaac MITCHELL, Ann STONER.2
  • Anecdote*: *** DISCUSSION ***
    There are two Henry Stoners:
    1. bap. 22 Sep 1751 at Cowfold son of Thomas Stoner and Mary
    2. bap. 22 Apr 1753 at Cowfold son of Thomas Stoner and Anne [maiden name White]
    There are two marriages:
    1. Henry Stoner and Phoebe Roberts on 25 Aug 1774 at Cowfold.
    2. Henry Stoner and Elizabeth Chasemore on 16 May 1775 at Horsham [Henry a husbandman of Nuthurst and Elizabeth of Horsham]
It is difficult to identify which baptism applies to each of the Henrys. Having found nothing from a study of the extended families, I feel that the only evidence we have is the age given at burial for both.
Although these ages can be unreliable it is all we have, and based on them the conclusion has to be that the 1821 burial is for the earlier 1751 baptism and the 1828 burial for the later 1753 baptism.
If we then agree that the 1821 burial is for Henry Stoner who married Elizabeth Chasemore then he is the one baptised in 1751. The evidence for saying that the 1821 burial is his is that his children Philip and William married and settled there. We also can show that his wife Elizabeth was buried there in 1833 (age 91 years stated on the burial).
I think that might be the best we can do, acknowledging that due to the unreliability of ages on burials, we may be wrong.
  • Death*: Henry Stoner died in 1828 at Cowfold, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: Henry Stoner was buried on 26 December 1828 at St Peter's, Cowfold, Sussex, EnglandB, "76 years."3

  • Marriage*: Philip Stoner married Frances Martin on 7 April 1786 at Cowfold, Sussex, EnglandB, Witnesses: James GANDER and Walter HILLS.2
  • Anecdote*: The baptism of Elizabeth Stoner on 16 Sep 1804 to parents Philip and Frances Stoner looks like it might be an error and should be for Philip and Elizabeth Stoner. The reason being is that Philip and Frances had Mary bap. 29 Jan 1804 and then Daniel 3 Feb 1805 and the Elizabeth doesn't seem to fit. However there is a gap in Philip and Elizabeth's children which would fit this.
