  • Birth: John Packham was born in 1751 at Keymer, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Baptism*: John Packham was baptized on 17 November 1751 at St Cosmos & St Damian, Keymer, Sussex, EnglandB.1
  • He was the son of Thomas Packham and Mary Relfe.
  • Anecdote: There is reason to doubt that this is the correct baptism for John Packham, but it is left here to aid future research.
  • Anecdote: This family is closely associated with Pain's (or Payne's) farm at Cuckfield. According to the land tax assessments, from 1780 Paines Place was owned by Francis Read who must have died about 1790 as it passes to his heirs. On 7 Nov 1791 it is bought by Warden Sergison Esq (with John Packham noted as tenant) who owns it until his death on 9 July 1811. It is then owned by his heirs until 1832. John Packham is the occupier all that time. In his will made in 1812, John Packham states: "the lease of the messuage farm and lands called Pains Farm ..... was also granted by the said Warden Sergison to me for the term of twelve years from Michelmas day one thousand eight hundred and six". It was obviously a lease renewal, but it shows that John Packham was always the occupier of Pains, not the owner.
  • Marriage*: John Packham married Sarah Ashfold, daughter of John Ashfold and Patience Winton, on 28 April 1778 at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Anecdote: The earliest land tax assessment for Cuckfield appears to be for the year 1780. John Read is the owner of Pains and John Packham the occupier. The tax assessed was £12 based on an annual rent of £60.2
  • Marriage License: John Packham and Mary Brigden obtained a marriage licence on 1 October 1794 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England, John a widower farmer of Cuckfield; Mary 29+ of the same parish. Sponsors: John Packham and Thomas Kenward, baker of Lewes.3
  • Marriage*: John Packham married Mary Brigden, daughter of William Brigden and Elizabeth Cox, on 5 October 1794 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB, widower yeoman of Payne's Place; Mary of this parish.3
  • Death*: John Packham died in 1812 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Will*: John Packham left a will made on 8 January 1812 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB.4,5
  • Will/Adm Transcript*: Yet to be transcribed.
  • Burial*: John Packham was buried on 25 February 1812 at Pain's Place, Cuckfield, Sussex, England, "64 years, Pain's Place."6
  • Probate: His estate was probated on 7 March 1812 Value under £3,500.
