    Ellen Wise married James Wilkins of Eastbourne a labourer, Banns were called in Eastbourne and Hailsham. In 1851 James inherited his father’s Public House - The Crown Inn but sold / signed it over to his younger Brother Walter. In 1852 James and Ellen emigrated to Australia by unassisted passage aboard the Banshee, unfortunately their first child Gift aged 2 died during the voyage. Members of the Wilkins family still reside in Eastbourne (including the author RD Wilkins) whilst James and Ellen’s line continues in Australia, see Ancestry Worldwide. Fanny named her third girl Gift Ann in 1853 providing further proof that the girls were sisters.

  • Will/Adm Transcript*: In the name of God Amen I William Knight of Eastbourn in the County of Sussex schoolmaster duly considering that it is appointed for all men to die and being mindful of the uncertainty of that great change when it shall please God to call me hence do make this my last Will and Testament of and concerning all my real and personal estate being copyhold the same having been surrendered to the use of my Will which it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with in such manner as herein after is mentioned.
    First I give and bequeath to Lydia my wife the sum of twenty pounds and to be paid her within a month after my decease and ten pounds per annum to be paid her by Thomas and Mary Rollison out of the property that shall be here after mentioned and sixteen pounds per annum to be paid her be Joseph and Susanna Wilkins out of the property that shall be here after mentioned during her life with her living in the parlour and the chambers over the same and pantry being a part of the messuage or tenement that we reside in with the furniture of the two said rooms the furniture to be at her use so long as she continues in the same which are the register stove, pier glass, cupboard, pictures and carpet. If the said Lydia Knight should? marry (the above is void) she shall leave the said parlour, chamber &c and instead of the twenty six pounds per annum. She shall have her thirds of the rents of Thos and Mary Rollison and of Jas and Susanna Wilkins after the repairs and taxes paid.
    Second I give unto Thomas and Mary Rollison his wife all that messuage or tenement and two small gardens that I now occupy with the remainder part of the furniture unless it shall be wanted to pay my debts a waggon house and a seven stall stable adjoining the same and the garden to the eastward to the width of the said messuage or tenement – two small gardens waggon house and stable. After the decease of the said Thomas and Mary Rollison I give the aforesaid premises &c unto William Rollison the second son of Thomas and Mary Rollison and his heirs. If the said Willm Rollison has no heirs then unto his brother Henry Rollison and his heirs - .... the said Henry Rollison has no heir then it shall go unto his eldest male nephew of the name of Rollison. Likewise I give unto Sarah Rollison the daughter of Thos and Mary Rollison twenty crown pieces which I have by me.
    Third I give unto Joseph and Susanna Wilkins his wife all that house shop and bake house that he rents of me with the messuage or tenement adjoining his house and shop. Likewise the slaughter house and stable and that part of the old Play House that is between his house and the seven stall stable with the garden to the whole width of the premises and the two small gardens that join the bake house. After the decease of Jos Wilkins and Susanna his wife I give all that house, shop and bake house and garden that joins the bake house to the southward and the yard for ... within the fence unto Mary Wilkins and Jane Wilkins her sister as joint heirs daughters of the said Jos and Susanna Wilkins and there heirs, if there should be no heir, then unto the eldest daughter of Joseph Wilkins there brother. After the death of Jos Wilkins and Susanna his wife I give unto Joseph Wilkins there second son all that messuage or tenement adjoining the house and shop with the slaughter house, stable and garden that joins the same, and the garden to the width of the whole of his fathers premises. And after the decease of Jos Wilkins ... ... I give unto his son Joseph Wilkins and his heirs all that messuage or tenement slaughter house stable and gardens the whole which I have given to her father. That part of the Old Play House that is between the house and shop and the seven stall stable – with that part of the yard to the width of it I give unto Thomas Wilkins the youngest son of Jos and Susanna Wilkins after there decease and to the eldest son of Thos Wilkins after his decease – if the said Thomas Wilkins has no heir then it shall go to the youngest son of Joseph Wilkins and Mary his wife.
    I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint Mr Thos White of Eastbourn builder one executor for which I give him five guineas – and Thos Rollison senr of Willingdon the other executor and after my just debts and funeral expences are paid the money that is left (if any) to be equally divided between George Wilkins the son of Jos and Susanna Wilkins and Thos Rollison, John Rollison and James Rollison the sons of Thos and Mary Rollison. Of this my Will hereby revoking all former Wills and request by me at any time heretofore made and declaring this only to be my last Will and Testament.     Archdeaconry of Lewes in the Diocese of Chichester. On the fourth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten.
    Appeared personally Mary Rollason the wife of Thomas Rollason of Willington in the County of Sussex shepherd and made oath that she hath looked at the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be the last Will and Testament of William Knight late of Eastbourne in the County of Sussex schoolmaster deceased, that she on or about the thirty first day of October last was present with the testator and saw him obliterate the words “unto Mary Wilkins and Jane Wilkins her sister as joint heirs” by drawing his pen and ink over those words, which now appear to be obliterated in the said Will. And this appearer further saith that she was present and saw the said testator William Knight write the Codicil on the back of the said Will and saw him sign the same and that the name “W Knight” subscribed thereto is his proper hand writing and signature.     I give devise and bequeath all and singular my freehold real estate and also, all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever of or to which I may die seized or entitled to unto the Trustee or Trustees here before named UPON TRUST that the Trustee or Trustees do and shall as soon as conveniently may be after my decease shall sell my said freehold real estate together with such parts of my said residuary personal estate as may be saleable and do and shall call in and compel payment of all such parts of my said personal estate as may consist of money or securities for money and do and shall possessed of the proceeds arising from the sale conversion and collection of my said personal estate and such parts thereof as shall consist of money (hereinafter called the residuary trust fund).
    Upon the trusts following (that is to say) As to one fifth part of the residuary trust fund UPON TRUST for my niece Annie Gough (daughter of my late sister Emily Phillips) of Little Malvern in the County of Worcester. Wife of Charles Gough absolutely if she shall survive me but if she the said Annie Gough shall die in my life time leaving a child or children who shall survive me and being male attain the age of twenty-one years or being female attain that age or marry under the age of twenty-one then UPON TRUST for such a child and children and if more than one in equal shares. But if my said niece Annie Gough shall die in my life time without leaving a child or children who shall attain a vested interest in the said one fifth part of the residuary trust fund then and in that event the said one fifth part shall go in aid and augmentation of the remaining four-fifth parts of the residuary trust funds herein after disposed of, And as to the remaining four-fifth parts of the residuary trust fund UPON TRUST for my said son William Hollibone Birch absolutely.
    Provided always and I declare that if the said William Hollibone Birch shall die in my life time leaving a child or children who shall survive me and being male attain the age of twenty-one years or being female attain that age or marry under that age then in such case the last mentioned child or children shall take (and if more than one equally between them) the parts as well original as accrued which my said son would have taken of and in the residual trust funds had he survived me.
    I declare that the Trustee or Trustees may let any hereditaments for the time being remaining unsold either from year to year for any term of years of such rents and upon such terms as the Trustee or Trustees shall think fit and may accept surrenders of leases or tenancies thereof and generally manage the same as the Trustee or Trustees shall think fit.
    I declare that every Trustee or Executor of this my Will who is or maybe of the profession of Solicitor may be employed to transact business or to do any act of whatever nature required to be done in reference to my estate and shall be entitled to charge and be paid for all professional and other charges for any business or act done by him or his firm in connection with the trust including acts which an Executor or Trustee could have done personally.
    And lastly I revoke all former wills made by me.
    IN WITNESS whereof I the said Susannah Birch the testatrix have to this my last Will and Testament contained in three sheets of paper set my hand this 4th day of October 1910 .... Susannah Birch ....
