William Ashdown

b. circa 1686, d. 1768
Last Edited: 8 May 2023
  • Birth*: William Ashdown was born circa 1686 at Sussex, England.
  • Anecdote*: The only possibility from the SFHG Baptisms Index is: William Ashdown bap. 1696 at Rotherfield son of William Ashdown and Jane [Moone, married 29 Mar 1692 at Wadhurst] but we don't have any proof (yet) that this is the one. Also, to accept this 1696 baptism would mean the age on his burial record is out by 8 years which does create some doubt (also there may be gaps in other parish records). There is another William Ashdown bap. 17 Apr 1687 at Rotherfield, son of John and Anne Ashdowne (interestingly, William and Elizabeth's first son is named John) but there is also a burial in Rotherfield on 19 Apr 1692 of William Ashdown, "son of John senior" which would appear to discount this.1,2,3
  • Anecdote: Ashdown is an important Sussex name. Firstly, it is associated with the Ashdown Forest making it a local Sussex surname. Secondly, it is a name everyone in Rotherfield (who has an interest in history) is aware of today as in the reign of “Bloody Queen Mary” 1553-1558 three citizens of Rotherfield were burnt at the stake in Lewes for their Protestant beliefs. Two of these citizens were from the Ashdown family.4
  • Marriage*: William Ashdown married Elizabeth Dickson on 12 August 1714 at East Hoathly, Sussex, EnglandB, William is of Arlington, and Elizabeth of Chiddingly.5
  • Anecdote: The family appears to have moved to Waldron about 1727 as their son Thomas is baptised there on 2 Apr 1727. This is the first Ashdown baptism in the Waldron parish registers since records began in 1538.
Their son John Ashdown is the first to marry in 1739 (at Laughton) and he and wife Sarah Clarke settle in Waldron.
Their son William would appear to have married c1748 as there is a baptism of an Ann Ashdown on 26 Nov 1749 daughter of William & Ann Ashdown. There is no further sign of this family at Waldron.
There is a burial of a William Ashdown at Waldron on 6 Jan 1799 aged 80 years, which would be a good fit for their son (bap. 31 Jul 1720) but the burial entry states "of Mayfield" so this person has been deemed to be the William Ashdown bap. 1719 at Burwash who married Mary Pratt and had family at Mayfield. William and Mary's children include an Alexander Ashdown, the name of the father of the William Ashdown bap. 1719 at Burwash and hence why he was identified as the one that married Mary Pratt.
  • Death*: William Ashdown died in 1768 at Waldron, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: William Ashdown was buried on 17 April 1768 at All Saints, Waldron, Sussex, EnglandB, "82 years."2

  • Birth*: Sarah Burt was born circa 1819 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB; place of birth confirmed as Hellingly in 1851 census.1,2
  • She was the daughter of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown.
  • Anecdote*: Although Sarah's birth or baptism record has not been found, her marriage to Charles Bedwell indicates that her father is Isaac Burt. She was also mentioned as a witness on sister Elizabeth Burt's marriage certificate, and she was working at the same house as sister Harriet in the 1841 census. The 1851 census confirmed her place of birth as Hellingly. Based on all this I am confident in placing her as a child of Isaac Burt and Alice Ashdown. (GGB.)
