John Young
b. circa 1665, d. November 1719
Father | Samuel Young b. 6 Jun 1624, d. Sep 1689 |
John Young was born circa 1665 at Beddingham, Sussex, England. He was the son of Samuel Young.
This John Young is the son mentioned in the will of Samuel Young of Beddingham (proved 1689). The will leaves him property in Ashburnham which supports the marriage to Mary Chamber as being the correct one (where he is mentioned as being "of Ashburnham"). John and Mary's first two children were baptised in Ashburnham but the remainder of the children were baptised in Denton, a small village next to South Heighton where his sister Elizabeth lived after her marriage to William Hollands. It is interesting to note that Elizabeth died in 1696 and was buried at Beddingham (where she grew up), along with their son John who had died in 1694. John Young's will of 1719 (see below) confirms these connections.
John Young is mentioned in the will of Samuel Young dated 26 September 1689 at Beddingham, Sussex, England.1
John Young married Mary Chambers, daughter of James Chambers and Mary Beane, on 22 December 1702 at Seaford, Sussex, England, John Young of Ashburnham; Mary Chamber of this parish.2
John Young's will of 1719 indicates that he held the manor of Runtington. A map of the manor is listed at The National Archives as being held by the East Sussex Record Office "AMS5711 Map of John Young's manor of Runtington, Heathfield, by Thomas Wood, 1709."
John Young was a mercer in 1719.3
John Young left a will made on 26 October 1719 at Newhaven, Sussex, England.3
Testator: John Young of Meeching alias Newhaven, mercer
Eldest son John, already provided for, 12 pounds.
To Brother Samuel Young of Beddingham and brother-in-law James Chambers of Seaford [as trustees], copyhold messuage in Meeching in which I now dwell, holden of the manor of Meeching, surrendered to the use of this will, and all freehold messuages, etc in Meeching in occupation of Thomas Elphick, and also the ferrey called Newhaven ferrey and one called Stock ferrey lying in Piddinghoe, all last mentioned messuages, ferreys etc purchased of William Lane.
Freehold farm in parish of Heathfield called Runtington in occupation of Edward Bradford together with the manor and all other privelges, rights, members etc. belonging to the said farm and manor, all which said estate both copyhold and freehold to be sold after my decease by said two brothers jointly with money arising used first to discharge debts, funeral expences etc. and remainder together with money from sale of goods & personal estate etc., the rents, credits, etc to be paid out by said brothers and my friends Anthony Stokes of Beddingham, Clerk, and Samuel Duplock of Mayfield, yeoman (together to be trustees and overseers) amongst my six other children Mary, Anne, Elizabeth, Samuel, Thomas and Sarah that each have sufficient maintenance & education till married or age 21 years out of interest of said money expending none of the Principal without necessity and as each attain the said age or marry he or she shall have an equal share of the said money.
Daughter Mary sole executrix, with assistance of said brothers and friends etc.
Signed and sealed John Young
Witnesses: Edwd Polhill, Nicholas Young, Ezek. Bristed
Proved 23 November 1719, Mary Young executrix.
(Abstract by Geoffrey Barber, Sep 2017)
The will suggests that John Young was a widower as his wife is not mentioned.
John Young died in November 1719 at Newhaven, Sussex, England.
John Young was buried on 8 November 1719 at St Leonard's, Seaford, Sussex, England, “Mr. of Newhaven”.4
His estate was probated on 23 November 1719 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England.
