John Latter

b. 9 November 1606, d. 1654

MotherAgnes A'Downe b. 19 Nov 1570
John Latter was baptized on 9 November 1606 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, England.1 He was the son of Edmund Latter and Agnes A'Downe.
The children Edmund and John are mentioned in the will of their grandfather, Edmund Latter.2
John Latter of Rotherfield contributed 1/- to the Relief of Irish Protestants 1642.3
Note that John Latter is identified as being deceased in his father's will of 1654.2
John Latter was a witness: The Rotherfield manorial court held on 9 Jul 1646 confirms the death of William, his wife Elizabeth and daughter Agnes. His only brother John Latter is left to inherit the property which would otherwise have succeeded to Agnes:
They present that Agnes Latter only daughter of William Latter deceased who held to her and her heirs the succession (...... after the death or forfeiture [of the property] of Elizabeth formerly wife of said William & mother of the said Agnes) of & in a messuage, house, garden & 2 parcels containing by estn 4 acres with appurtenances situate at Towne rowe[?] in Rotherfield since last court died so seised and that John Latter is uncle & heir of the said Agnes viz. only brother of the said William her father comes the said John & prays etc the succession etc. To whom the lady grants etc And he makes releif 3/-etc.4
John Latter married Elizabeth (?) circa 1649 at England.
John Latter died in 1654 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England. (no burial record exists probably because of the poor record keeping during the English Civil War.)5
The Rotherfield manorial court records of 24 May 1654 state that John Latter the younger has died since the last court meeting was held and that he died with the right to possess (after the death of Elizabeth wife of John Page, wife of the late William Latter, and who is still living at this stage) of viz. one messuage & 5 acres of assart land with appurtenances & that Edmund Latter is his eldest son & heir to the premises & within age viz. of the age of four or five years and that after his death there happened nothing to the Lady for a heriot because it was a reversion etc. This is just a notification to the court of Edmund's right to his inheritance which the court accepts and records.6

John Latter was born in 1654 at England.
John Latter was baptized on 31 March 1654 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, England, Abode: Town Row.1 He was the son of John Latter and Elizabeth (?)
John Latter is mentioned in the will of Edmund Latter dated 20 January 1654/55 at Tonbridge, Kent, England.2
The Rotherfield manorial court held on 7 Jul 1695 records:
At this court comes John Latter a customary tenant & surrenders 1 messuage with appurtenances & 5 acres of assart in Rotherfield held by the yearly rent of 3/- heriot & other services called Salters [at Town Row on Packhams Hill - Pullein]. To use & …… of Elizabeth now wife of Thomas Hutchinson of Rotherfield Batcher & the heirs of the said Elizabeth for ever which said Elizabeth present in court praysed And she gives the lord for fine £5.
The Salters property had been in the Latter family for 100 years (1595-1695).
Note: Thomas Hutchinson married Elizabeth Greenwood by licence at Tonbridge on 29 Oct 1682, with the record stating that Thomas was "of Rotherfield". The wording of the entry in the manorial records suggests this may have been a second marriage for Elizabeth. A Richard Greenwood married Elizabeth Collins at Wadhurst on 8 Jan 1677/78 (SMI). It does not appear that Elizabeth was his daughter.3
John Latter died circa 1700 at England.
No evidence of John Latter having married or having children has been found. He may have been the last male Latter in his line (originating from Edmund Latter (c1575-1655)).
